Lenten Games
The Rev. Mother Nina Bacas
I know that “Lenten games” sounds oxymoronic, but Lent isn’t all about giving up fun. Especially when the games represent your Lenten discipline for 2024! So, if you like to give up something for Lent, please consider adding in these challenges [...]

Adult Forum with the Rev. Dr. John Koenig
“How the Spirit Leads Us in Prayer: New Testament Wisdom for Entering into Lent”
Feb 11, 9-9:45 a.m., in the MPR
The season of Lent isn’t so much a long period of sadness and renunciation as a deeper journey into all our feelings about the story or Jesus Christ. Both Jesus and the Father promise that we’ll be led on our way by the supreme Guide, Counselor and Comforter we call the Holy Spirit—which is definitely good news. Come and explore what it might mean for you by reflecting together on some key biblical texts.

Lenten Soup Suppers
Feb 21, 6-7:15 p.m., in the Sanctuary
On Wednesdays during Lent, we will gather for supper in the sanctuary. Following our meal, adults can join Mother Nina and Cathie Roy for a Lenten reflection. Children and youth will have their own separate activity in the Prayground! After our activity, all will enjoy a Taize Compline.

Join us in welcoming two new members of our church team!
The Rev. Robert H. Bryant
Priest Associate
Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Fr. Robert Bryant is a cradle Episcopalian who moved to the West Coast after becoming an Episcopal Franciscan Friar in 1980. He has remained here ever since! After withdrawing from the Franciscans, he made his home in San Francisco, where he was ordained to the priesthood in 1988. After leading two Bay Area churches for 14 years, he was called as Rector of the Parish of St. John the Baptist in Portland, Oregon, from which he retired in 2023 after twenty years of service. Fr. Robert’s passions are liturgy and music, yoga, gym training, travel and the 49ers. He lives with his very talkative Amazon parrot on the grounds of Petco Park in downtown San Diego. Robert will be with us on two Sundays per month, and he looks forward to serving St. Bart's!
| |
Jacob Robling
Field Education Intern
Jacob grew up in Missouri, and he is a graduate of Drury University, where he majored in religion. He received his MDiv from Westminster Seminary California in 2023. Jacob is in the ordination process in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, and he also serves at St. Michael’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Carlsbad. He sees St. Bart’s as a welcoming parish that is eager to follow God’s guidance into the future. Jacob says, “I’m excited to be participating in that!” He and his wife, Emma, live in Oceanside with their dog, Wednesday. Jacob will be with us on three Sundays per month.

Fellowship Groups Forming
Get to know fellow parishioners over dinner and activities. The groups will be formed of 8-10 individuals around affinities and available meeting times for activities like outings, theater, ball games, picnics, and of course food events for those who enjoy cooking and eating together. The point is to get to know one another on a deeper more personal level over the course of a five month series. The Fellowship Groups will be kicking off in February for our first round; break for the Summer and then start the next round in August. We’re very excited to bring this practice back at St Barts!

2024 Flower Sponsors
The Flower Sponsor calendar will be out for weekly altar flower sponsors for 2024. The flowers for this Sunday, February 11, are sponsored by Marina Sterling in thanksgiving for her sons and granddaughters, and by Lisa McAfee in loving memory of her son, Cameron.
Consider sponsoring flowers for an upcoming weekend. It’s a great way to remember or celebrate a special person or day in your life. For more information, contact Bobbie Davis, (858) 775-2624.

Ministry Spotlight: A/V Team
AV Team
The St. Bart’s Audiovisual (AV) Team assists with all things technical for our weekly services, in addition to special events and concerts. You can find them in the booth at the back of the sanctuary: one person operates the audio needs for the sanctuary and live stream, in addition to managing the PowerPoint slides, and another person operates the cameras for the live-stream feed. Thanks to these devoted volunteers, we have been able to have weekly live-stream services since 2020, with great-quality recordings!
New AV volunteers are always welcome. Youth in middle school or older are also encouraged to join; we have had a number of youth operate the equipment, and they have loved the opportunity to do something akin to playing video games at church! There is a moderate degree of training involved, and operators are scheduled 1-2 Sundays per month, based on availability, with opportunities to serve at both the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services. If you would like to be involved, please reach out to Dr. John-Luke Addison.

Feb 25, 4 p.m., in the Sanctuary
Join us for our Choral Evensong service led by the St. Bart's Children’s Choir! Come hear our children, with support from adult singers, as we support and nurture our young parishioners and encourage their leadership within our community as they practice the beautiful liturgy of Evening Prayer, with stunning music, prayers and Scripture.

Lenten Activities for Children & Youth

The following five Wednesdays will include Soup Suppers that will take place in the Sanctuary from 6-7:15 p.m. which will include activities for the children and youth to do in the Prayground area of our worship space. Youth will then be dismissed to head to their room until 8 p.m. when Youth Crew regularly concludes.
