Rabbinic Search Town Hall & Listening Session: We Want Your Input!

This Thursday, August 6 at 6:30pm in Hirsch Hall

Please join us for a Town Hall/Listening Session as we continue the year-long process to fill Rabbi Yael Hammerman's position. This session will build on the data and comments that we received from the initial survey, and is an important opportunity to provide additional input to the Search Committee.

The Gym will be open for children to play so parents and caregivers can attend the meeting uninterrupted!

Renew Your Membership: Last Week Before High Holiday Seat Priority Deadline!

Please support our communal Jewish home by renewing your Ansche Chesed membership. Renew by next Friday, August 7 to request the same quantity and location of High Holiday seats as in the past. After that, seats will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Shabbat Services in Hirsch Hall

Summer Shabbat morning services will be held in air-conditioned Hirsch Hall (downstairs) instead of the Sanctuary. For your comfort, please consider bringing a light sweater.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer a livestream until we return to the Sanctuary. As an alternative, TeleTefila will continue to hold virtual services throughout the summer.

As a reminder, our weekly Parsha Class is paused for August, and will resume in the fall.

This Monday: Zeeva Bukai, The Anatomy of Exile, in discussion with Sheila Lewis.

ZEEVA BUKAI was born in Israel, raised in New York City, and lives and writes in Brooklyn. She is the author of The Anatomy of Exile and The World Between. Her stories have appeared in many publications, and her honors include fellowships from the Center for Fiction, Hedgebrook, and the Byrdcliffe Artist in Residence program. She is the Assistant Director of Academic Support at SUNY Empire State University.

Birthright with AC: A Chronicle of a Generation in Three Acts

Sunday, August 16 at 2pm at the MCC Theater (511 W. 52nd St.)

The new play Birthright follows the reunion of six young friends after a Birthright trip to Israel in 2006, over the span of 18 years; they have an exploration of identity, fracturing communities, and the struggle to stay connected across difference. Provocative, funny, and piercingly contemporary, Birthright asks whether connection is still possible when every conversation feels like it could be the one that breaks everything apart.

Please consider signing up for a volunteer shift at the reopened shelter. Particularly during the summer while people are away, every volunteer makes a huge difference! Volunteer shifts are easy, with step-by-step procedures and an on-call volunteer to answer questions that come up.

ONGOING PROGRAMMING

Shirei Chesed Community Chorus

Wednesdays, 7:30 - 9pm in 5 North

Shirei Chesed Community Chorus continues to build community through learning a rich and diverse repertoire of Jewish music, and bring harmony into the world that needs it more than ever. Our 4-part chorus brings together lovers of choral singing from both Ansche Chesed and the wider Jewish community. Our recent performances include classical programs with The Bachanalia String Orchestra, a jazz concert with The Afro-Semitic Experience ensemble and Oratorio Souls on Fire based on the book by Elie Wiesel.

We will begin our 2026-67 season on October 26, with a fascinating program Mazal Bueno, a Portrait in Song of the Spanish Jews, as we join The Western Wind, a GRAMMY nominated vocal ensemble, and narrator Julie Benko, a Broadway star. In the Spring we will once again join forces with Nashirah, The Jewish Chorale of Greater Philadelphia, for concerts at Ansche Chesed and Philadelphia. Would you like to add your voice to these exciting collaborations? Join our weekly rehearsals on Wednesday nights, starting on October 7! The ability to carry a tune is important; reading Hebrew or music is not required; rehearsals are Wednesdays from 7:30–9:00 PM. Free for AC members; non-members pay $90 per semester or $180 per year.

Study Biblical Hebrew, with JTS

Beginning October 6, Designed for all levels

JTS’s online Biblical Hebrew program offers beginner through advanced level courses. Beginner courses cover the fundamentals of biblical grammar such as nouns, verbal stems, prefixes and suffixes. Advanced courses introduce you to the genres of biblical literature, including poetry and prophetic texts, and offer opportunities to workshop passages with your fellow adult learners in real-time.
