Chapel Patio: Laying the Foundation for the Labyrinth

Laying the Foundation

The Rev. Mother Nina Bacas

Over these past few months, you may have noticed a transformation of the chapel patio. Much has happened! All the soil behind the stucco walls was dug out, waterproofing paint was applied inside the walls, and the walls were primed and painted. Next, the patio surface was power-washed with muriatic acid, and now it is being painted. All this is laying the foundation for the new labyrinth. We give thanks to Mike Jewett and his team for getting this done. Much, much more is to come in this space!

Not to bombard you with metaphors, but what’s happening on the patio is a direct reflection of what’s happening in our overall church. Your pledge lays a foundation for our church to continue to do God’s work here with our congregation, in our local communities, and around the world. So, if you haven’t already, please do whatever preparation is needed to prayerfully discern what you can pledge for 2027. With everyone’s help, much, much more is to come here at St. Bart’s!

St. Bart’s 2027 Annual Giving Campaign

Our 2027 Giving Campaign kicked off earlier this month; this year’s theme is “One Church. One Boat. One River.” Many of you have already picked up your pledge packets, which include a letter from Mother Nina and an information sheet outlining St. Bart’s milestone accomplishments in 2026 and how your pledge dollars support the church’s operations, mission, and values. If you haven’t gotten your envelope yet, please pick it up this weekend. Next week, we will mail out the remaining envelopes.

A big thank you to everyone who has submitted their pledge—we are off to a strong start toward reaching our 2027 Giving Campaign goal of $970,000!

If you haven’t already pledged, we invite you to watch this short video by the Borkowski family sharing why they give, and then prayerfully consider your own pledge. You can mail your pledge card in the provided envelope or drop it in the offertory basket, or pledge online. If you need assistance pledging or setting up regular online giving, contact our bookkeeper, Joelene Showers.

Tips for Using Realm

For those who’ve joined Realm, our new church membership software, we’re offering a series of tips over the next few weeks to help you get more comfortable using this tool to connect to our St. Bart’s community.

Our first tip: If you want to access Realm on your computer instead of downloading the app on your phone or tablet, just open the web browser you used to initially sign up for Realm and type “onrealm.org” in the address bar. In most cases, your browser will remember your previous visit to the site and instantly take you to the Realm main screen.

If you haven’t yet joined Realm and are having trouble accepting the invitation emailed to you last month, or have any other issues using Realm, please contact our bookkeeper, Joelene, or our office manager, Claudia.

Any questions? Email feedingsandiego@stbartschurch.org or just sign up—we’ll help you with everything you need when you join us.

All Saints’ Weekend, October 31–November 1

On All Saints’ Weekend, to commemorate those we have loved and lost, a “Table of Remembrance” will be set up in the narthex, on the credenza that holds our statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We invite all parishioners to bring photos or mementos of anyone you’d like to pray for and place them on the table. The table will remain up for the remainder of the week.

Brahms Requiem: November 1, 4 p.m.

ST. BART’S MUSIC SERIES:

Brahms German Requiem

Sunday, November 1, 4 p.m., Sanctuary

Join director John-Luke Addison and the St. Bart’s Community Chorus on All Saints’ Day, November 1, for their performance of Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem). One of the great masterpieces of the choral repertoire, the requiem offers a message of comfort and hope to the living rather than mourning for the dead. Presented in Brahms’ own four-hand piano accompaniment, this intimate version preserves the work’s profound emotional depth and musical grandeur while allowing the text and choral writing to shine with remarkable clarity. Tickets $20 ($10 for students), available in advance at the St. Bart’s Music website.

Cursillo Weekend—February 20-23

Come & Experience Cursillo!

February 18-21, 2027, Julian

Cursillo—meaning “a short course in Christianity”—began in post–Civil War Spain as a way to renew faith and Christian community. Since then, it has spread around the world, touching lives and strengthening the Church.

Cursillo candidates are invited to attend an all-expenses-paid weekend to learn about the Cursillo movement and, most importantly, experience the love, warmth, and welcome of the Cursillistas—people who have previously participated in Cursillo. Our next Cursillo weekend will be February 18-21, 2027. Come and discover how a weekend of faith, fellowship, and Christian love can make a difference in your spiritual journey!

Interested in learning more? Contact your parish representative, Christine Attoun.

October Coffee Hour Hosts

Last Names F-L

Coffee hour at St. Bart’s is about more than just a kind treat—it’s a way for us to embody our hospitality. This month, if your last name starts with F-L, it’s your turn to host! Bring whatever sweet or savory nibble the Spirit moves you to share (cut into serving-sized pieces, please).

Note: You can borrow a plate or platter from the MPR kitchen so you don’t have to worry about retrieving your own plate later.

Prayer Cycle

In our Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for: The clergy and people of St. Paul’s, Yuma; migrants and all who minister to them: Lord Jesus, when you multiplied the loaves and fishes, you provided more than food for the body; you offered us the gift of yourself, the gift that satisfies every hunger and quenches every thirst! Your disciples were filled with fear and doubt, but you poured out your love and compassion on the migrant crowd, welcoming them as brothers and sisters. Amen.

In our Military Cycle of Prayer, we pray for: USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60).

In the Cycle of Prayer for the worldwide Anglican Communion, we pray for: The Church of the Province of Central Africa; the Diocese of El Camino Real – The Episcopal Church; the Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn – the Anglican Church of Australia; the Diocese of Canterbury – the Church of England; the Diocese of Cape Coast – the Church of the Province of West Africa; the Diocese of Cape Town – the Anglican Church of Southern Africa; the Diocese of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba – the Church in the Province of the West Indies.
