A Message from Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton
Dear siblings in Christ,

As many of you know, last week the ELCA Churchwide Assembly adopted a resolution that, among other things, declared the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) a sanctuary denomination. Many of you are asking, “What does this mean?”
Our call to love our neighbor is central to our faith. In our baptismal covenant we promise to strive for peace and justice in all the world. One of the ways we live out this vow is through our commitment to welcoming the stranger. With this declaration, we publicly state that walking alongside refugees and immigrants is a matter of faith.
We have prepared talking points to provide a better understanding and further clarification on what sanctuary means for you and your congregations. We acknowledge this will look different in different contexts across the ELCA.
We also hope this resource will help guide conversations with your parishioners and your community about what our faith says about immigration.
“Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God” (Romans 15:7).
In Christ,

The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton
Presiding Bishop

Rally Day...  We hope you will join us for the first day of Sunday School on  September 8th . We've got lots of fun stuff planned for this year, so you don't want to miss out! And parents, don't forget about the hospitality hour that takes place in the Fellowship Hall during Sunday School. It's a great way to connect with other church members!
New for this year...  Sunday School will now meet from 8:30 to 9:30 am every week from September 8th through May 17th. Rise and shine for our new early time! And
remember, even when the kids are on break from regular school, we will still offer Sunday School each week.
Attention third graders and parents...  You will be receiving your bibles during worship on Sunday,
September 8th. Please plan to attend!

A new time; a new plan.
Hospitality Hour is moving to 8:30 Sunday
mornings. Parents, drop your children off at their Sunday school classroom and join us in the
fellowship hall for coffee, a bite to eat, and a time for fellowship. Don’t have a child in Sunday school?
Come early for 9:30 worship and enjoy some food and hospitality.
With this earlier time, we realize that making a breakfast bake may not work for everyone. So we will try a new plan this fall. We will have the host
prepare the food of his/her choice. It can be
anything from coffee and donut holes to breakfast bake, fruit, and juice. Coffee and creamer are
available in the church kitchen. The host will
provide the rest and then return after service to clean up the kitchen.
If you are willing to host, please call Sue Thompson at 641-942-6280 or sign up on the clipboard in the fellowship hall.
See you September 8.

Cards for Caden

We are only a few weeks away from Caden's birthday.
Let's make it a special one!
Jennie Dawson is organizing an 11th birthday card/gift card drive for Redeemer member Caden Haugen (grandson of David and Janan Haugen). Caden is currently in treatment for brain cancer initially diagnosed in 2015. He is in 5th grade at Irving Elementary in Indianola. Due to his cancer meds Caden cannot be outside much so gift cards for bowling (Bowlerama or AirLanes in Des Moines), mini Glowgolf (in West Des Moines), or movies would be appreciated as well as gift cards to McDonalds, Burger King, WalMart, Pageturners Book Store, Casey’s, etc. If you want Jennie to purchase gift cards you can donate cash and she will purchase them for you. Please have all birthday cards/gift cards to the church office or to Jennie by Sunday, Sept 8 to allow time to get these to his Grandma Janan before Caden’s actual birthday on Sept 15.
Let’s show Caden some
Communion Bread Bakers Needed:

During the summer a few people have been making the communion bread. Alter Guild is looking for help with this.  If anyone is interested in baking communion bread please contact Barb Knoll. It is very easy to make and can be made in advance and frozen.
Thank you.
Lay Eucharistic Ministry Meeting
Sunday, September 15 at 10:30 a.m.
Rm 207/208
All current Lay Eucharistic Ministers are encouraged to attend. We will be meeting to catch up on how the first few months have been going, sharing things that are going well, things that need improvement, etc.

The Lay Eucharistic Ministry is looking for more people to join us!  This is an outreach ministry that provides communion to our members under special circumstances. We are looking to
create more teams interested in doing regular monthly visits so that we can serve more people as well as subs that are interested in helping on an as needed basis.  If you are interested, we are having a training on Sunday, September 29 at 10:30 a.m. in Rm 207/208.
We are looking for a Confirmation secretary :
❤ Taking attendance on Wednesday nights.
❤ Contacting companies or other for events within the church.
❤ Gathering supplies for Wednesday nights.
❤ Assist the pastor and leaders in confirmation.
❤ Other duties to be assigned.
You will have mentors to help you go through the process. It is a two-year commitment, so that you can build relationships with the kids. If you have any questions, please talk to either Pastor Heidi or Kari Borlaug about this decision. Come and join our confirmation team!
The pictorial church directory is finished and ready to print! For those of you who got your directory pictures taken, you will receive a free copy of the directory from Lifetouch.
