Gilles-Sweet Selected to Present Warrior PRIDE at upcoming State of OHIO PBIS Showcase
We were selected out of thousands of schools to present at the upcoming PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) showcase in Dayton, Ohio. Ohio PBIS showcase is an opportunity for Ohio districts and schools implementing PBIS to showcase what PBIS looks like in their schools/districts.  Gilles-Sweet is one of 230 schools who received this recognition. This award would not be possible without our staff's dedication to teaching and reinforcing PBIS at Gilles-Sweet.

Family and Community Engagement (FACE)
Hi, Fairview Park Families!

I hope that the end of the first quarter has gone smoothly for you and your family. If there are any issues,  please call/email your child's mentor/homeroom teacher, counselor or principal.  We all want you and your child to  have a successful year.

Regarding the learning management platform: if there are any parents that want to understand it better, we have a group of parents that are willing to be  your mentor. If you are interested in having a parent mentor, email me  and I will connect you.  For other ways for individual help, call/email your child's mentor teacher, counselor or principal, and/or Mrs. Wightman, Director of Teaching and Learning.

On the topic of Red Ribbon Week: We had a great week of activities and announcements K-12. At the Parent University on Monday we had some amazing speakers come in to talk about drugs, alcohol and vaping.  The information we received is in the links below. Some
important notes:

1) A child's brain is not developed until at least 25 years old so any substance they put into their body will cause issues with the development of the brain.

2) If you see a change in your child... coughing, fatigue, change in sleep habits, change in their behavior, etc., monitor what they are Googling, texting, talking about or is in their room. Talk to them! If you need some help on how to talk to your kids about drugs, here is a great resource.

Here are some additional resources:

Turkey Trot
On Friday, November 22, 2019 , the students and staff at Gilles-Sweet Elementary School will participate in the 15th annual Turkey Trot . This year in addition to collecting food items for the Fairview Park Hunger Center, our PTA will be collecting pledges. These pledges will help our PTA continue to offer and support the many terrific programs we have here at Gilles-Sweet. The PTA is looking for Turkey Trot pledges to help them maintain the level of support they have done in the past. Although pledges are not mandatory, they are greatly appreciated.

The entry fee for the Turkey Trot is one (or more) canned food item that can be turned into the classroom teacher. Any student who is unable to bring in a canned food item will still be able to participate.

In the past we have had each student return a permission slip to participate in the Turkey Trot, however this year we are making a change. If you do not want your student to participate in the Turkey Trot please sign and return the permission slip that will be sent home with your student. You do not need to return it if your child is participating.

As we continue to focus on improving our health, wellness and physical activity at Gilles-Sweet we are striving for 100% participation this year. Please remember all students can walk the course, they do not need to run. We have the Turkey Trot rain or shine so please make sure students dress appropriately for the weather.

Prizes are as follows:

Turkey: First place boy and girl in each grade

Gift Cards: First, second, third, fourth, and fifth place boy and girl in each grade.

Along with the students, several staff members will participate in the Turkey Trot . Parents and guardians are also invited to participate in the Turkey Trot.

We need parent volunteers the day of the run to stand along the course to help identify the course. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Dana Bell dmoonbell@gmail.com. In addition to staff and parent volunteers, we have the middle school and/or high school Cross Country team to assist the students with the course.

Important Information for Parents
Students who are involved in extracurricular activities-from chess club to cheerleading to chorus-tend to have higher self-esteem and stronger connections to school. But an overloaded schedule with too many activities can have the opposite effect, leaving your child-and you!-stressed. Keep these tips in mind for managing your child's activity load.

Coin Challenge
Dear Families,

Our PTA  is collecting funds for our All for Books program November 4-8.

By donating $1 or loose change you can help us:

* Purchase books for classroom libraries
* Give more children easier access to books
* Help get more kids reading, and kids reading more

The All for Books money we collect also helps readers beyond our school and community. Scholastic Book Fairs® matches monetary donations with a donation of up to $1 million in books from The Scholastic Possible Fund, which distributes books to children in need through organizations such as Kids In Need Foundation, Delivering Good, and the National Center for Families Learning.

We are having a "Coin Challenge" contest between the classrooms!  For every $5 that each classroom collects they will receive a raffle ticket to win a new wobble seat.  The classroom that collects the most total amount in each grade also gets a popsicle party! Please send your dollars or loose change donation in the week of November 4-8 .  Your act of kindness helps bring more knowledge, imagination, and a love for reading into the lives of our students.

Sincerely,

Gilles-Sweet PTA
Support Your School with Box Tops
You can use the Box Tops for education app to keep earning all year! Last year Gilles-Sweet earned almost   $2000  just by clipping Box Tops! So send those clipped Box Tops into your child's class, the top collectors in each grade will win an ice cream party!
