Gilles-Sweet Elementary
News & updates for the week of May 11, 2020 *  Learning-at-Home Edition
Did your student leave any materials/belongings at school or have library items to return?
Teachers have been in to clean out their rooms and student desks, lockers, and cubbies the past two weeks. They bagged and marked each student's materials. Realizing some families may want to have these at home sooner than later, we will have pick up days the week of May 18th-22nd. Tables will be set up by classroom teachers' names outside the front doors where students' belongings will be bagged and marked with the students' name.  If your child also has any library materials that you would like to return, please place them on the book cart located next to the tables.  Parents and students may drive up and pick up their belongings OUTSIDE the front doors on the following days and times:

First Grade: May 18, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Second Grade: May 19, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Third Grade: May 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Fourth Grade: May 21, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Fifth Grade: May 22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

*If these days/times do not work for your family, please contact Mrs. Brady ( ) or Mr Krivak ( ) and we will arrange an alternate time/day

Attention 5th grade Students/Parents:
We will have a farewell banner available for 5th grade students to sign and write a special message to their classmates.
Wrapping up the School Year
As Dr. Wagner stated in his weekly communication on Thursday, May 6th, the last day of school is June 11th with new instruction wrapping up on May 29th (for Gilles-Sweet May 28th).

The remaining days of the school year will be as follows:
  • Passion Project:   The main activity Gilles-Sweet students will work on is a Passion Project . During the week of May 26th, teachers and all students K-5, will explore a topic that each student wants to research and/or learn more about. They will develop their essential question and develop a list of possible resources to use. Students will work on this project the next week, June 1st-4th. Details will be shared with parents/students.
  • Virtual Field Day Physical Education teachers Mrs. Klodnick and Mr. Kull have planned a virtual field day for all students K-5 to participate in.  It will take place June 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, and 10th with the winning classes and grade levels announced on June 11th. More details for this will be forthcoming!
  • Let's Celebrate the Arts!  We realize we have asked A LOT of our students and families during the emergency remote learning and many students/families simply had no time to focus on our special assignments that were shared each week. During the week of June 8th-11th, our specialists will create a Choice Board of many activities students can choose to do during the last week of school.  This is not mandatory, instead a fun way for students to remain engaged during the final days of school!
  • Farewell Wrap Up Meetings June 8th-11th  Our staff has spent a great deal of time brainstorming ways we could provide closure for our students and teachers in a virtual environment. Each teacher will be reaching out to families to schedule a time to meet during the week of June 8th-11th. During this virtual meeting, students will share their Passion Project, reflect on their school year, and set goals for summer. Teachers will also share resources for families to use over the summer (students will be keeping their iPads at home this summer), reflect with students on their progress over the school year, especially during this remote learning, and ways they can stay engaged even when summer time begins.

Family and Community Engagement
Hello Fairview Park Families!

I hope the few days of nice weather we have had brought  sunshine to your families.

Last week, I shared a lesson on  Optimistic Thinking  for parents to do together with their children at all levels.  How did it go? I would love to hear back from you all!

This week, we are going to discuss   Self Awareness. It is important for children  and  adults to assess what their strengths and skills are "to become more aware of what specific skills, talents and strengths help us achieve our goals." I hope you have fun learning together as a family what awesome skills you all have!
