Thank you to all families who visited during National School Lunch Week!
Student Dress Code Reminder

The student's comfort and safety should be the guide as parents determine what should be worn to school. A child should come to school neat and clean. Clothing worn to school should be comfortable and provide protection against temperature, insect stings and bites, and abrasions.  We discourage the wearing of perfume, cologne, makeup, aftershave, etc. by students. If a child uses fragranced personal care products (i.e. deodorant) we ask that you monitor their use.

It is the parent's/guardian's responsibility to dress children appropriately for outdoor play and exercise each day.  Inappropriate clothing worn to school (including bare midriffs, short shorts, tank tops, clothing with alcohol or drug-related symbols or violent or inappropriate messages on them) disrupts the educational process and shall be subject to disciplinary action.  Shorts are NOT permitted after November 1 or before  March 1 of each school year, unless the outside temperature is 70 degrees or higher. Hats, headbands, and bandanas are not to be worn in school except on special spirit days. Appropriate shoes help protect students from a number of injuries. For this reason, flip-flops, slip-on sandals, clogs, and any type of open shoe or shoes with oversized heels are not to be worn to school.

Gilles-Sweet Red Cross Blood Drive
October 25, 2018
2-7:00 PM

Critical Need for Blood Due to Hurricane Michael - Gilles-Sweet Elementary School Blood Drive Thursday, October 25th

Hurricane Michael has already forced the cancellation of more than a dozen blood drives, causing hundreds of units of blood to go uncollected in Alabama and Georgia. More cancellations are expected in the Southeast over the coming days. To meet the needs in these areas and throughout the country, the Red Cross asks individuals unaffected by the storm to give blood. Before the storm, the Red Cross already had a critical need for blood donations following Hurricane Florence. Students who recruit one presenting donor will receive a Red Cross medal.  Also, be entered to win one of five $500 gift cards! Help save lives - sign up to donate now! Go to  RedCrossBlood.org , enter Sponsor Code Gilles.

Gilles-Sweet Halloween Parade
Wednesday, October 31, 2018
2:00-2:20 PM
Gilles-Sweet students will celebrate Halloween on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 with a parade for all parents.
All first through fifth grade students should bring their costume in a labeled bag; costumes should NOT be worn to school . Morning classroom activities will be conducted as they would on any normal school day. Students should be able to put their costume on easily and preferably over their clothing. The student must easily apply any face make-up when they are dressing for the parade in the afternoon. Students are NOT PERMITTED to color their hair due to the aerosol nature and/or mess associated with coloring one's hair for costuming purposes.
Important Reminders for ALL Families
In order to ensure a safe and positive experience for all involved, we are asking that students adhere to the following guidelines:
*No masks or coverings of the face.
*No weapons or objects that could be used as weapons.
*Students should be able to put on and take off their costume independently.
*No inappropriate costumes reflecting violence, gore, promiscuity, and scary clown costumes.
Parents, please come watch the parade!
Parents are invited to view our parade which will take place between 2:00-2:20 p.m. Parents are asked not to park in the Convenient Store parking lot. Weather permitting, the students will exit the main front doors of the building (from the gym), parade on the sidewalk along the front of the building to Alexander Road, along the back parking lot and back into the building using the back (SW) Cafetorium doors. In the event of inclement weather, the students will parade inside the building so that they can see each other's costumes.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call Gilles-Sweet at 440-356-3525.

Ask Carrie
Hi FPCS families! Next week is the end of the first quarter already. I hope that your child is on track to having a successful school year.  If the grades aren't up to par, may I suggest:

1) Every night (Mon-Thur) your student should have a homework time (between 4 p.m.-8 p.m.) where they can finish up some work, study, read, etc.

2) Make sure your child has a good study area with no distractions and electronics put away.

3) Your child should be getting around 7-8 hours of sleep every night.

4) If your child is struggling, they should talk with their teacher (5-12 grade) to let them know. If you have any concerns, call/email their teacher.  If concerns continue, call/email their counselor.

Please email me a question you have regarding things going on at school, parenting, etc... then I will share the answer next week. You know that you are not alone and other parents may have the same concern/question.
