Former Holy Names, Current Albany Medical Center Campus Stands Test of Time

Holy Names Archives Coordinator Mary Ellen Scally Conboy '61 presents Albany Medical Center's VP of Communications and Marketing Matt Markham, and former IT employee Dick Kernan, with pictorial history of 628 Madison Ave.

The late scientist Dr. Carl Sagan once said, “you have to know the past to understand the present.”

That’s the drive that’s kept the story of Academy of the Holy Names – in all its iterations – alive, and it’s been a passion project for Holy Names Archives Coordinator Mary Ellen Scally Conboy ’61, and Dick Kernan, a former 39-year IT employee of Albany Medical Center.

What do the pair have in common? An address in downtown Albany which both hold esteem.

This Week at AHN

Multicultural club and French club sponsored Mardi Gras activities on Tuesday with a bake sale at the end of the day just in time to get ready for the Lenten season.

Penny wanted to make sure everyone was feeling the love on this Valentine's Day, so she handed out free hugs in The Commons.

“For you are dust and unto dust you shall return.” Thank you, Fr. Bob Longobucco and Deacon Tom Fallati for beginning our Lenten journey with us this Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday Calls Decision-Making into Focus

By Dr. Martin Kilbridge

Below are the welcoming remarks Dr. Kilbridge made for the Ash Wednesday liturgy. We thought we'd share them with you.

Decision-making is our most important activity. The decisions we make define who we are. Our character is the product of every decision we have made. If we are loving, hopeful, and faith-filled people, it is because in every decision we've made, whether small or large, we have practiced these virtues. Courage and integrity are honed in our decisions as we confront new situations. Virtues take practice.

The good news regarding this is if we are not happy with who we are and are not living up to our ideal selves, we can consciously and actively work to make different decisions. Lent is a perfect opportunity to improve ourselves. It is a time for self-reflection. It is a time to reconsider our character. Lent is a time to consider who we are.

Our school's motto is Esse Quam Videri, to be rather than to seem. It is a powerful call to be our authentic selves. It is also the theme of the Ash Wednesday Gospel reading (Mt 6:1-6, 16-18). I will leave it up to you to make the connection when we hear it read.

Environmental Club Seeks Used Dresses

DID YOU KNOW? In the United States, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste – equivalent to 85% of all textiles – end up in landfills on a yearly basis?

AHN's Environmental club is hosting a dress swap from the week of February 26 to March 1, where you can reduce clothing waste by cleaning out your closets!

Coat racks and hangers will be placed in front of the gym. Dresses not swapped by the end of the week will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Big Wins for Panther Squads; Spring Sports Tryouts

Congratulations to our varsity cheer squad on its third place finish at the Colonie High School Raider Rumble!

The varsity basketball squad held on for a win over Schalmont on Tuesday for its "pink" game, led by Sophia Bologna's 26 points and go-ahead three pointer. Morgan Brewer added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. A portion of proceeds from the game's ticket sales and concessions went to benefit Coaches vs Cancer. JV was also victorious in its matchup.

Varsity basketball has now earned the two-seed and a first-round bye in Section II Class A playoffs, and will host the winner of Emma Willard/Cohoes next Friday, February 23 at 7:30 in the quarterfinals.

Also, a reminder for families: spring sports tryouts for lacrosse, softball, and outdoor track begin Monday, March 11.
