You are Beautiful

By Kathy Witherspoon, Dean of Student Life

“You are beautiful.”

This simple but powerful phrase was heard throughout Holy Names as we celebrated You Are Beautiful Day this week. This annual tradition invites our community to reflect on the beauty we all have within us. Through an assembly and activities led by members of the LOVE Club, students were encouraged to recognize their own gifts, strengths, and unique qualities. They were reminded beauty shows up in kindness, perseverance, creativity, humor, courage, and compassion. It lives in how we treat others, how we respond to challenges, and how we grow into who we are becoming.

Created with Purpose, Called to Belong:

A Community of Giving

By Kristin Vivian P'14 '17, Director of Institutional Advancement

Catholic Schools Week reminds us of the importance and value of our wonderful community and second family here at Holy Names.

As parents, it was important to my husband and I to provide a foundation for our children where they could be immersed in and given opportunities to live out their Christian faith. We trusted that God was at work in their lives on a day-to-day basis. Here at AHN, not only are the students “Created with Purpose, Called to Belong”, but so too are our parents, alumnae, and greater community members.

In a faith-based school community, a part of belonging is philanthropy. At Holy Names giving back is never just about funding programs or maintaining buildings. At its heart, it is about expressing the love we have for the experience of being a member of this community—sharing to make love visible.

Giving Tuesday Update

Some bleachers are still available! Follow the link to secure yours today. Additional funds raised will go to wish list items such as: a new scorer’s table, wall emblems, and team chairs.

Thank You!

Thank you to all who supported our recent Giving Tuesday appeal to reimagine the gym. With the generosity of more than 100 donors, we were able to raise $68,000 which will enable Holy Names to complete the following updates:

1. Repaint the gymnasium walls. Work is scheduled to be done during April break. Thank you to CG Construction Group and Matt Crudo P'30 for the gift of labor for the project!

2. Gym floor refinishing. The gym floor will be refinished from mid-June to mid-July. Thank you to Jim and Ann O'Toole P'13 '15 for their Leadership gift.

3. Gym padding and banners will be updated, and bleacher dedications prepared for the start of the 2026-27 year.

This Week at AHN

JLOC Induction

We are commemorating Catholic Schools Week this week at Holy Names. On Monday, we celebrated our school by devoting a Mass to Catholic education! As a special thank you, Fr. Bob Longobucco was given his official senior sweatshirt.

We also welcomed the newest inductees to the Junior Ladies of Charity! Congratulations to: Annabelle Ackah-Miezah, Bailey Chen, Vivienne Ciccone, Bella Dalzell, Vivienne Gifford, Anna Rice, and Gioia Zuppa. Thank you, also, to the Ladies of Charity and current JLOC officers who were on hand for Monday's ceremony.

Candlemas Celebration

Back in early January, when AHN celebrated The Epiphany, Profesora Gibbons’ seventh-grade Spanish class participated in the Ecuadorian tradition of sharing “Rosca de Reyes” (Three Kings Bread). Inside each loaf was hidden three baby Jesus figurines.

According to tradition, the students who found them were considered lucky, and were responsible for throwing a party on February 2 to officially mark the end of the Christmas season.

Fast forward to today, and it was party time, commemorating “Candlemas,” which is widely celebrated in Mexico and Central America as a day to bless seeds and crops. The celebration typically includes candles and food – in our case, chips and salsa! Students were also able to make paper “brujas” (witches). Light-colored paper = good spirits!

Masterminds Teams Win on the Road

Congratulations to our JV (6-0) and varsity (5-1) Masterminds teams, which each won two matches on Monday at Rensselaer to improve their overall records.

Moon Bee

Thank you to all who supported senior Allie Santilli at her Moon Bee in The Commons on Thursday.

Allie's service project is supporting The MoonCatcher Project, and students helped her assemble menstrual hygiene kits for girls in developing countries.

Power of Paw-sitivity

Thanks to our friend Ellen, a former AHN employee and current volunteer with Guiding Eyes for the Blind, for bringing in Lois -- a guide dog in training -- to visit our students on Thursday and provide some much-needed smiles!

Vivi '32 sat with Ellen to learn more about what it takes to train a seeing eye dog. Click the image to watch.

Students Advocate for Climate Justice

Annabelle Ackah-Miezah, Marina Cappellano, Bella Dalzell, and Mrs. McSparron attended a symposium at Siena University focused on Integral Ecology: Earth’s Cry, Humanity’s Call. Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conventual, presented the Franciscan vision of engaging the world through the lens of St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Creatures, while Br. Ryan Thornton, OFM explored Franciscan approaches to the economy that emphasize inclusivity and holistic care.

While at the symposium, the group also met Barbara Wyman Martenis '78, who was volunteering at the event and graciously posed for a photo with our current students!

Students School Faculty, Staff in Kickball

AHN's celebration of Catholic Schools Week continued on Thursday with the annual Students versus Faculty/Staff kickball game.

Each class sported a different color, and the adults were in their AHN gear. Unfortunately for the grown-ups, school spirit was all they came away with as they were trounced mightily by the student team. Back to their day jobs on Friday.

Panthers Updates

Panthers on Hot Streak

Congratulations to the indoor track and field team for finishing fourth at Sectionals over the weekend!

The team had four 1st place finishes and one 2nd!

A winning weekend included another 1st Place finish for the varsity cheer team after Saturday’s victory in competition at Columbia High School! The team placed 3rd in competition at Shaker High School on Wednesday, and will compete, along with JV Saturday at Colonie.

Congrats also to the JV and varsity basketball squads for picking up where they left off, each with another win -- this time on the road versus Cohoes.

On the varsity side, Julia Viglucci followed up her career high 29-point effort to lead the way with 16 in the team's 67-32 victory. Maggie Volmer added 14 points. Allie Rafalko had 9, followed by Ella LaBoissiere with 8, Jaiden Lumpkin with 7, and Arabella Villegas with 6. The Panthers move to 12-5. The teams head to Albany Academy on Friday.

Congratulations are in order as well for our sixth-grade CYO basketball team for winning both its games this weekend to be crowned Champions of the Panther Classic! Way to defend the home court!

Thank you to all teams and families who participated and showed their support.
