Rest in Peace, Sister Ann

Sister Ann Marean

We here at Academy of the Holy Names extend our deepest condolences to the family of Sr. Ann Marean, SNJM, who passed away over the weekend at the age of 91.

Last September she stopped by for a tour and visit with Dr. Kilbridge, Admissions Director Ann Travers ‘81 P’14 ‘18, and Regina Scarano LaGatta ‘70 P’98. Sr. Ann was a former trustee and principal at the lower school (where Mrs. Travers was a student). She also taught at the campus at 628 Madison. This year marked her 71st as a Sister of the Holy Names.

As Private Schools Go Co-Ed, Albany's Academy of the Holy Names Stands Firm on All-Girls Mission

At a time when private schools across the Capital Region and beyond are transitioning to co-educational models, Academy of the Holy Names remains an enduring standard for single-sex education — and of the distinct advantages its advocates say it brings.

Why Our Mission as an All-Girls School Matters More than Ever

Dr. Martin Kilbridge

Recently, a leader of a coeducational school remarked “the world is coed,” and suggested single-gender schools are limited in what they can provide. His comments raise an important question: what makes Holy Names so distinctive and vital today as an all-girls school?

At Academy of the Holy Names, we share the same goal as every educational institution: to prepare young people to thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. Where we differ is in our belief of how to best make that happen for young women.

This Week at AHN

Fall Open House

Thank you to everyone who made our Open House a success!

We couldn't have done it without the efforts of our student ambassadors, faculty, staff, coaches, parents, and alumnae volunteers who were on hand to showcase the best of AHN.

Guests were treated to campus tours, as well as presentations from Student Council President Ella Schoenborn (WATCH) '26 and alumna Brianna Wagner '17 (WATCH).

Middle Schoolers Get Creative

Middle schoolers were given a fun assignment this week: during a morning of creativity and team building, they were able to design their dream middle school! Guess how many included a Starbucks?

Career Day

Thank you to all our guest panelists for Career Day, which included many alumnae, in fields ranging from healthcare and hospitality to entertainment, finance, and government, who took time to network with students.

Also, a special thanks to our keynote speaker, Dr. Alicia McAuliffe '95.

Panthers Updates

Congratulations to Lily and Riley for their 1st and 6th place finishes, respectively, at the Swimming and Diving Sectionals!

Fall Athletes Honored

Congratulations to our fall athletes, who were honored this week at Duo at the Dunes at our annual banquet. A special thanks to the Booster Club for organizing the event.

Poinsettia and Wreath Sale

Academy of the Holy Names' Booster Club is selling a variety of poinsettias and wreaths for the holiday season. The sale proceeds go directly to the Booster Club, supporting our school's athletic programs.

Please place your order online by November 24. Pickup will be on 12/5.

Help Wanted for Craft Fair

We're looking for parent volunteers to help staff the AHN table at the CBA Craft Fair on Saturday, November 8 for a couple-hour period between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Interested in helping out? Email Admissions Director Ann Travers.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

Let's share our blessings this Thanksgiving by giving thanks and giving back! Junior Ladies of Charity is hosting a Thanksgiving food drive through November 15. They will be collecting non-perishables in the school lobby. All donations will go directly to the Regional Food Bank. Together, we can help make every table a little more full this holiday season.

Seniors Collecting Stuffed Animals, Dolls

As part of their senior service project, Sophia and Kate are looking to improve the quality of life of senior residents at Glendale Nursing Home!

Studies show stuffed animals and dolls provide a comforting object to hold, which can have a calming effect, particularly on dementia patients. They can also help foster connections with caregivers.

A donation box is available in the lobby.

Small Business Saturday

AHN Families,

With the holidays — and Small Business Saturday — right around the corner, we’re expanding our list of AHN community-owned businesses!

If your family owns a business, we’d love to include you. Our goal is to promote and celebrate AHN family businesses while encouraging our community to shop locally and support one another this season.

Let’s shine a spotlight on the creativity, talent, and entrepreneurship within our AHN family!

For more alumnae news and updates, follow our series "Connecting with Katie Ann" with Director of Alumnae Engagement Katie Ann McDermott '98. Click the image to visit her page.

New Academic Scholarship Opportunities for Prospective Students

AHN will be offering its next academic scholarship opportunity for prospective students on Saturday, November 15.

The exam serves as a scholarship qualifying exam as well as assisting with student placement. Girls should arrive by 8:15 a.m. to sign in.

There is no fee for the exam and no specific requirements in preparing; however, it is important to get a good night’s sleep.
