This Week at AHN

Thank you to Camp Chingachgook for hosting our eighth grade class this week! Our aim was to have a successful first field trip of the school year and we’d say mission = accomplished!

Thanks to all colleges and universities which took part in this week's College Caravan for students. Participants included: SUNY Schenectady County Community College, Niagara University, SUNY Adirondack, Russell Sage College, Maria College, University at Albany, SUNY, Clarkson University, SUNY Fulton-Montgomery Community College, Hudson Valley Community College, Keuka College, SUNY Fredonia Alfred University, SUNY Plattsburgh, St. Bonaventure University, Herkimer College, Siena College, Nazareth University, Champlain College, SUNY Delhi, and SUNY Cobleskill.

Led by Fr. Bob Longobucco, AHN celebrated its Opening/Senior Liturgy on Thursday.

The occasion was complete with the commissioning of new eucharistic ministers, and after a day of gifts and surprises from their schoolmates, seniors received their class shirts.

Panthers Scoreboard

It was another busy week for the AHN Panthers.

On Tuesday, golf was victorious in its matchup versus Albany Academy. Cross Country won its varsity meet at Mohonasen High School, and soccer picked up its first win of the season with a 2-0 shutout over Lansingburgh. Also, varsity volleyball continued its winning ways with a 3-0 straight sets win over Lansingburgh.

Soccer made it back-to-back wins with its Thursday 1-0 victory over Ichabod Crane. Addison Fogarty had the lone goal and her sister, Emma, preserved the shutout with a penalty kick save. Golf added another win, topping LaSalle 1-0.

Next up: Tennis heads to Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Friday afternoon. Modified volleyball heads to Schalmont while JV and varsity head to Ichabod Crane. The swim team is also in action at Mohonasen/Schalmont.

Varsity Cross Country is in action Saturday at the Queensbury Invitational.

JV and volleyball host South Glens Falls on Monday.

On Tuesday, modified and varsity Cross Country head to Ichabod Crane, Golf takes on Voorheesville Central, Soccer heads to Albany Academy, and tennis takes on Mohanasen/Schenectady.

Tennis Courts Update

Once again, the AHN community is stepping up to help our students have the best experience possible!

AHN's tennis courts were in dire need of resurfacing -- so much so all this year's matches thus far have had to be played on the road. Fortunately, that's about to change thanks to a generous donation from the family and friends of Ever Riggione '28, Mom Cara Nigro and Grandfather John Nigro.

Work took place all week to upgrade the safety of the playing surfaces and ensure our players will be hosting teams in a matter of days. We are beyond grateful.

Raising Alzheimer's Awareness

AHN is raising awareness of Alzheimer's Disease.

Friday marked our first dress down day of the school year. Students dressed in purple, and were encouraged to bring a donation of any amount to support Alzheimer’s research.

ALSO, the greater AHN community is invited to join our team for this year's Alzheimer's Walk at Siena College on Saturday, October 26. Scan the QR code or follow the link to sign up or to make a donation!

For New AHN Faculty Member, Every Day is Valentine's Day

Maximizing one’s potential is par for the course at Academy of the Holy Names. That goes for students and faculty alike. That’s why Jennifer Valentine, AHN’s new Assistant Director of College Counseling, seized the opportunity offered to also teach English.

“I actually taught at an all-girls, private Catholic school prior, so I know the deal,” Valentine says. “You can wear many different hats when you work at a private school.”

This is Mrs. Valentine’s first year teaching at the middle school level, and she says she’s really enjoying it. “Everything related to ELA is a priority for me, but I think stressing the importance of personal organization and reading comprehension skills are two things the girls will be hearing a lot about this year. My goal is to get my eighth graders prepared for high school. We also will be writing a research paper this year, so writing analytically and learning how to cite sources is also a skill I want to prioritize.”
