Women's History Month Profile: Elisabeth Jackson

Meet Elisabeth Jackson, Executive Director of Bridge Over Troubled Waters (BOTW) since 2013.

Elisabeth's experience at BOTW stretches back over 25 years: she served as an intake counselor, running BOTW's Mobile Medical Van, from 1993-2003. A graduate of UMass-Boston, Elisabeth was honored with a Boston Business Journal "40 Under 40" Achievement Award in 2014. She has served on several boards, including the City of Boston Continuum of Care Leadership Council and the Advisory Board of the National Safe Place Network.

A veteran of Downtown, Elisabeth has enjoyed "watching the growth and development of the neighborhood" over the past three decades. She "loves the [BID's] holiday season decorations and especially the [BID's] carolers." For young women aspiring to be in her field, Elisabeth cautions that "social work is tough work--you need to understand others so that you can truly be there to help them." That said, she is "energized and determined to ensure that every kid who comes to BOTW at high-risk leaves as a capable, healthy young adult."

Elisabeth's key mentor is Barbara Whelan, BOTW's founding Executive Director, who hired Elisabeth to work there. Per Elisabeth, BOTW "has maintained the gift of Barbara's incredible legacy, building innovative new responses to the needs of today's youth experiencing homelessness."
Women's History Month Profile: Jennifer Scott

Meet Jennifer Scott, owner and operator of Common Vines and Taste Wine Bar since 2017 and a Downtown resident since 2007.

A graduate of the University of Michigan and then Harvard University, Jennifer worked for nearly two decades in consulting before making the leap, with her husband, Christopher Hsi, to become a proprietor of Common Vines and Taste.

Jennifer, who "loves being Downtown because of its central location and diversity," notes that Downtown's "new energy of tech start-ups, as well as more residential buildings, have together created a unique and amazing mix of people and a new sense of community." Jennifer's advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? "Life is too short to not reinvent yourself. Always trust your gut instincts--they're right. And most importantly, don't dwell on your mistakes, no matter how big they are."

Among her mentors, Jennifer cites Sandy Block, VP of Beverage Operations, Legal Seafoods, as well as her husband, Chris.
