Restaurant News: Strega Caffé Coming to Summer Street; Boston Chops and Democracy Brewing Opening Soon

Downtown Boston's restaurant scene will have several exciting additions this spring!

The Varano Group will be opening their seventh Boston area restaurant, Strega Caffé, inside the newly renovated lobby of 99 Summer St. in early April.

"It's going to be a grab-and-go cafe with the quality of food you find in our restaurants, which is above what you expect from a cafe," said Malcolm Wooff, CFO of the Varano Group.

The cafe will serve latte, tea, cold brew coffee, nitro coffee, French pastries and more. The cafe will be open on weekdays from 7 am to 5 pm

Boston Chops will be opening their second Boston restaurant in early spring. The steakhouse recently unveiled their signage and illuminated red doorway at 52 Temple Place. The restaurant's more than 9,000 sq. ft. space will include private dining rooms to host parties of 25 people or more.

The mouthwatering menu includes prime steaks and chops, sour cream and horseradish mashed potatoes, roasted bone marrow, pork belly mac and cheese, lobster fra diavolo, crispy fried sweetbreads, and oxtail croquettes. There's also a raw bar and more seafood dishes.

Also, on Temple Place will be the first-ever brewery in Downtown Crossing, as  Democracy Brewing (35 Temple Place), is on tap to also open early this spring. The menu is going to be simple pub fare with a twist like beer nachos accompanied with chicken confit and apple salsa. Menu items are often recommended with beer.

"The brewery downstairs is going to be really, really nice," said co-founder Jason Taggart. "The brew house itself is a big showpiece."
'Triumphs and Laments' Debuts at
Emerson Urban Arts Media Gallery

Internationally acclaimed South Africa-based artist William Kentridge's "Triumphs and Laments" debuted at the Emerson Urban Arts Media Gallery (25 Avery St.) on Feb. 15th.

"Triumphs and Laments" was originally produced as a 550-meter long frieze along the banks of the Tiber River in Rome. The gallery show includes the complete set of aquatint etchings and woodcuts relating to the frieze, two long maquettes that diagram its first processional, a set of monumental stencils, and a video highlighting the opening performance in Rome.

"In this work, Kentridge presents figures from a broad sweep of Italian history in a grand procession to represent the progress and follies of human endeavors. In this work, the artist has brought this theme to contemporary relevance with his images of the migrant boat people," said Joseph Ketner II, director of Emerson Urban Arts.

The gallery is open to the public and admission is free. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 2 to 7 pm. The exhibit runs through April 14th.

Property owners must:
  • Clear sidewalks within three hours of snowfall ending or three hours after sunrise if it snows overnight, and
  • Clear at least a 42-inch-wide path for wheelchairs and strollers.
Do not shovel snow into the street or you can be subject to fines. Also please remember to:
  • Remove ice to bare pavement or make as level as possible and treat with sand, sawdust, or similar material.
