A weekly news and information publication for Oakland School for the Arts
OSA News

With this newsletter, we are ushering in a new editor. Please welcome Jennifer Murov, whose daughter is an 8th grade School of Visual Arts student. Please join me in welcoming her!

Thank you to everyone for all the support you've provided the OSA News in the almost 4 years that it has existed. When we started it, we thought there was a need for this kind of information tool...and your feedback confirmed it. I am proud to have been the inaugural editor and am excited that Jennifer has stepped up to the challenge of taking over.

As always, you may submit stories at the same address (see sidebar), with the same deadline of Mondays at noon.

Warmest regards,

Laurie Halliday

Back to School Night on Thursday, October 2nd at 6pm

Parents will have an opportunity to follow their child's schedule, meet teachers, and hear about each class' curriculum. We will have copies of schedules available, but we advise that parents print schedules ahead of time from PowerSchool to avoid the line. Middle School families can pick up schedules in the Student Center and High School families in the Black Box. We look forward to seeing you there!

Editor's Note: There is a show at the Fox Theater that begins at 8pm October 2, so please consider coming early enough to find parking.

APT Announcements

2014-2015 promises to be an exciting school year for OSA and for the APT. The APT-inspired Learning Center, under the leadership of Academic Support Coordinator and APT Board member, Wendy Snyder, is growing, expanding its services, and playing a strong role in the academic lives of our kids.

We are gearing up to play a strong and vital role in supporting our school and our kids by managing volunteer forces, sponsoring events, supporting the Learning Center, providing for the health and safety of our kids, and other needs as identified as the school year unfolds.

Our plans for the school year include:

  • Strengthen our structure and capacity.
  • Promote 100% participation in the State of the School Campaign in family financial contributions to the school.
  • Build and support our school-wide community through monthly meetings that include spotlights on curriculum and parent education programs.
  • Support academics through teacher wish lists, assistance in the classroom when needed, and recruitment of tutors and support for the Learning Center and Academic Support Team.
  • Support school-wide health and safety.
  • Strengthen school-wide communication through the OSA News, the creation of a family roster, monthly meetings, and Google Groups.

Cazadero Music Camp

Kicks Off the Year for Instrumental Music

The Instrumental Music students, faculty, and parent chaperones just returned after attending a weekend-long camping trip in the beautiful redwoods at Cazadero. Not only did students bond and spend time with each other in the beautiful outdoors, but they had the opportunity to play and create music together in a gorgeous setting. A highlight during the weekend was Mr. Kanozik's nature transcription and composition workshop, in which students listened to the sounds in nature and learned how to musically notate them. The weekend culminated in a lovely concert for the Instrumental Music parents in the Cazadero Music Camp amphitheater.
