Dear Parents and Guardians of St. Francis of Assisi School,

In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy Gale says, "there's no place like home."  Over the past week, this sentiment resonates with all of us as we quarantine together with our loved ones, praying that we all remain healthy and safe.  I loved this movie and the themes it offers, especially for us today in these challenging times. Dorothy has to go on an adventure to truly appreciate what she has at home with her family.  Let's call our current adventure - Distance Learning! How much do we all appreciate the challenging and difficult work of teaching over these past five days. Dorothy ends her adventure with the great and powerful Oz.  Thanks to her little dog Toto, she pulls back the curtain and meets the person responsible for orchestrating the amazing pyrotechnic display. This week, I am pulling back the curtain on Distance Learning to share three amazing individuals that have been key to our success over the past week!

We are so blessed to have Mrs. Jo Steins on staff as our Digital Media Specialist, aka blended learning superhero.  Mrs. Steins began as our Technology Teacher and quickly transitioned to this unique role of training teachers and students on innovative methods for learning.  Mrs. Steins is an out of the box thinker with a brilliant mind for creating engaging lessons for students at all grade levels. She is very patient and truly a lifelong learner.  When we realized that we would transition to distance learning, Mrs. Steins swiftly created professional development customized for each grade level and in just three days, set us up for a successful launch.  Behind the scenes, she has worked long hours with the teachers to customize, innovate, and organize lesson plans for this new way of learning. We could not have done this without you Mrs. Steins!

Mr. Jeff Brown and Mr. Dustin Slater are SFA's two IT staff who behind the scenes have moved mountains to prepare us for this transition.  When we realized that students in lower grade levels would need iPads to learn at home, they quickly mobilized a plan in 3 days to prepare devices with filtering, applications, and updates needed for students to begin working remotely.  Over the past five days, they have fielded over 400 service tickets! These gentlemen model humble service while providing foundational support for the infrastructure needed to learn. We are thankful for their long hours patiently helping parents, students, and teachers!  Mr. Brown and Mr. Slater - we are blessed to have you on our team!

In the movie, Dorothy realizes she is not alone.  Her companions desire courage, intelligence, and love.   Mrs. Steins demonstrated great courage, Mr. Brown and Mr.  Slater provided resourceful design, and our parents have warmly and generously shared their love and support for our SFA community.  Thank you parents for opening your hearts to this new way of learning and for gifting our faculty and administration with an abundance of patience, as we link our arms together on this new journey.  I look forward to the day when we can look over the rainbow at the time when the Spirit of St. Francis helped us pull through COVID-19.

Catholic Identity Ministry
Pray with us this Friday evening...!

The Way of the Cross is a powerful prayer that we can all do from our homes, even though we traditionally gather at church to pray this way.

Attached are two versions - a young reader version and one more suitable for 4th grade and up. Please take some time this Friday night to pray the Way of the Cross together.

Also included are a set of coloring pages that we purchased for our Catholic Identity Ministry event. If your child wants to color one of the mosaics, please post it online and tag us so we can see how we are all united in this time of prayer and patience...people with such faith watched on as our Savior was crucified and died, not knowing that the resurrection would happen on that Friday we now know as Good Friday... may we surrender ourselves in this time of unknowing to the resurrection that is to come in God's great providence!
