Dear St. Francis of Assisi School Parents and Guardians,

Albert Einstein said, "Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better."  Our sixth grade students are doing just this at Ecos Institute for four days this week. For some of our students, this is their first time in the mountains and away from the comforts of home.  For some of our parents, this was the first time they had to say goodbye for an overnight trip and tears were shed as we all waived goodbye to the buses. These trips in sixth, seventh and eighth grade provide a unique educational opportunity for our students, breaking down the walls of the classroom and engaging social, emotional, and academic learning in a kinesthetic way.

With the changes with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), outdoor education has become a more engaging experience for our students.  Before the new standards, students would be spoon fed information and then they would regurgitate what they learned. Now, students are front loaded with knowledge and then given the opportunity to explore how it is applied in their natural surroundings. Students then discuss and reflect on the impact this information has on the world around them. They are also learning about ways they can be good stewards and actively engaging in the responsibility of the care and keeping of God's creation.

I was able to spend Tuesday afternoon and evening at Ecos. I was so impressed with the facility, the leadership and staff, and the dedicated cabin counselors who worked very hard to take great care of our students.  Mr. Mandry, Mrs. Coad, and Mrs. Raymond have prepared the students well for this experience. Much love goes out to the three teachers who are going above and beyond to not only care for our sixth grade students, but are also giving parents daily updates and posting pictures of the daily activities.  On the night hike, our students were thinking critically and asking excellent questions of their counselor. I was proud of how well-mannered and respectful our students were with other students and staff throughout the day. Our school is spending the week with three other Diocese of Orange Catholic schools at camp.  It was evident at meals saying grace, on hikes reflecting on God's creation, and through their witness of the Gospel in their words and actions, that our students have developed a beautiful gift of faith and awareness that God's creation is truly a gift in their lives.

In appreciation of God's creation,

Jeannette Lambert
Principal
