Dear St. Francis of Assisi School Parents and Guardians,

During the 2018-2019 school year, St. Francis of Assisi School's Catholic Identity Committee will focus on providing faith opportunities for our families.  As Mrs. Cooper, Religion Coordinator/8th Grade Teacher, explained at the General Parent Meeting, teachers are working on new Religion Standards that came out of the Diocese of Seattle.  We are in the process of mapping the standards and reviewing current resources to determine the best ways to support faith-based education at all grade levels. These standards are extensive and involve reading the Scripture more intensively at all grade levels.  As Catholics, we hear Scripture weekly in our liturgies and reflect on the Word as the presider breaks it open in the homily. The new standards encourage students to dive deeper into the Word throughout the week as well. This becomes a joint effort between home and school.

We understand the challenges that families face as parents work hard to raise faith-filled Catholics.  As a tri-parish school, we recognize that there are many opportunities at each of the parishes for families to dive deeper into their faith journey.  We encourage families to build community in their home parish and to get involved in the ministries offered so your students see faith in action through your example.  Our Catholic Identity Committee wants to support your faith journey as a family here at school. We are providing a beautiful opportunity to build a "family mission statement" by spending time weekly talking about what values your family holds dear to them.  We hope parents take time to nurture themselves as you give so much to your children. Our advent mission will nurture the whole family. Plan on spending time as a family during Advent to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and prepare for the celebration of our Lord's birth. Finally, starting in October, look for Family Food for Thought, a simple weekly inspiration and/or reflection for your family dinner conversation. Thank you to this Committee for your dedication, inspiration and prayers for our families.

I would like to share a blessing for our families from St. John Paul II prayed on the the Feast of the Holy Family:   "I wish to invoke the protection of the Holy Family of Nazareth.. it is therefore the prototype and example for all Christian families..St. Joseph was a just man..may he always guard, protect and enlighten families.  May the Virgin Mary, who is the Mother of the Church, also be the Mother of the Church of the home...May Christ the Lord, the Universal King, the King of families, be present in every Christian home as He was at Cana, bestowing light, joy, serenity, and strength."   St. John Paul II....pray for our families.

Extended Care Aide - Anna Low-Neilson

We are so thankful for dedicated daycare staff.  Mrs. Low-Neilson brings a spirit of joy and love to staff and students alike.

Why do you love SFA?

It feels like family at SFA.  Everyone is caring and friendly.

I also went to Catholic school when I was younger. I attended St. Benedict Catholic School in Montebello. I cherish those memories because we were all treated like family there. My parents would always have the priests and nuns over for dinner. Our family made amazing friendships at that school.

What do you love about your role in Daycare?

I love that I get exposure to all different grades, ages and fun personalities. I just love them all!

What do you like to do in your free time?

My favorite thing is to take care of my 4 month old granddaughter Scarlett!
