Dear Parents and Guardians of St. Francis of Assisi School,

Last week, the Saints came marching in for our All School Liturgy on Friday.  They looked fantastic and reverently led us in giving thanks for the Communion of Saints who pray for us daily.  Fr. Fred reminded us all that we too are on the path to becoming Saints, if we choose to work hard, pray hard, and recognize that we are all works in progress.  My favorite moment was when he pointed to several students and said that someday, a Catholic school student could be dressing up as them for All Saints Day!

As parents, we work hard to support our "saints in the making" on a daily basis.  The job of parenting is demanding, challenging, and at times, we may even question if what we are doing is making a difference.  Our school counselor, Mrs. McCarty, LMFT, has offered to host three meetings this year to meet parents where they are at and offer ideas for challenges we all face.  The first session held yesterday on Growth Mindset, continued the conversation that began last year. SFA staff, faculty, and administration worked together to build a culture where students felt committed to personal growth and empowered to take risks in this learning environment.  This means that they will experience failure but in the culture of growth mindset, failure is a healthy tool to learn important life skills, such as resiliency, problem-solving, and confidence in one's ability to persevere.

Mrs. McCarty focused on some poignant ideas as takeaways.  She encouraged a growth mindset in our children by recognizing that we all have experienced failures and have made mistakes.  Modeling our failures for our children demonstrates that this is a normal part of living life and learning from our past. She also noted that while parents may be well-intentioned with overparenting, this practice can hinder our children's opportunity to build resilience.  As parents, our job is to allow our children to experience the discomfort associated with failure and support their decision making as they work to find solutions and resolve when challenges arise. Her final point is one of the greatest strengths of this school - find your support/village so that you can lean on other parents who may have gone through similar hurdles in parenting.  One of the greatest gifts we can give each other as parents at SFA is prayer for one another, that we each may find strength for the journey, empathy for the heartache, and hope for our children's future built on a solid moral foundation.

Ever hopeful,

Jeannette Lambert
