Dear St. Francis of Assisi School Parents and Guardians,

Yesterday our Catholic Identity Committee hosted our first "Family Mission Event" aimed at supporting the important work of raising families and providing resources to make your work easier and more productive at home.  Pam Hurwitz, "mom on a mission", led us through the challenges and blessings of journeying with "growing" children in our homes. She used the metaphor of growing strong bamboo from a leadership book by Greg Bell, Water the Bamboo: Unleashing the Potential of Teams and Individuals .  The patience and perseverance needed to water ground prior to ever seeing growth years later with bamboo is a great metaphor for our work as parents of young children.  Often parents work so hard when children are young to practice using manners, taking responsibility for their actions and property, using words to express their strong emotions, and learning how to live with others in a family/community.

Pam shared her "Mission Boxes" which are designed to help family time and conversation with focus on shared values and goals and ultimately create a family mission statement.  What would your mission be? Do you want your children to be successful? Face challenges and persevere? Be faith-filled Catholics who bring light to the world? Sometimes we ask ourselves, is our hard work paying off?  Pam referenced a statistic that parents who practice the faith in the home with their children, grow up to be adults who are 300% more likely to live out their faith. How you model your values and faith does makes a difference, even when you may not see it right away at home.

My family has a shared value of volunteering - sharing time and gifts with others.  Before my husband and I started a family, we loved volunteering for youth ministry and young adult retreats.  After our daughter was born, we wanted to share our love of volunteering at church with her. She spent ten summers with me at St. Joseph's Vacation Bible School where she grew from being participant to volunteering as crew leader.  During her time in Catholic education, teachers modeled values of giving back through Campus Ministry, service projects, and volunteer opportunities at all grade levels. We were blessed to see the roots of faith take hold. As a junior and senior in high school, she has chosen, on her own, to volunteer as a youth leader for Confirmation and youth ministry. We continue to pray as she prepares for college, these roots of faith keep her strong.

I hope at St. Francis, you are encouraged and supported on your journey to raise good human beings.  We hope to provide more opportunities for parents to come and receive "soul food" as we recognize your work is hard and challenging.  We are thankful for your partnership in working together to form good consciences in our students so they will grow up to know right from wrong and will be the light of Christ in the world!  May you be richly blessed for the good work you do in your families.

A Thanksgiving Tradition

Create a family gratitude Jar! Set out a jar and some festive paper on your counter this  week. Invite your family members to write something down that they are thankful for each  day. It can be anything - big or small. Place the notes in the jar and watch as your family's  blessings fill up and overflow the jar. On Thanksgiving Day, you can read them aloud as a  family and be reminded of all the hidden joys in your lives. It can serve as a beautiful  reminder of the great joy that gratitude brings.
