Dear St. Francis of Assisi School Parents and Guardians,

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas break.  This year I was so thankful for time off to spend with family and to simply slow down.  We chose to stay local and enjoy some day trips, spending time outside enjoying the beautiful weather.  How blessed we are in southern California! One of my favorite traditions is to create a vision board with family and friends on New Year's Eve.  We spend the evening collaging words and images that reflect our hopes and dreams for the coming year. We choose a word that will guide us through the coming year and will set the tone for our personal goals.

Here at St. Francis of Assisi School, we chose the words "growth mindset" to focus on for the 2018-2019 school year.  We are being intentional about providing opportunities for students to increase their grit and perseverance. We want to support and foster growth for each individual to become the best version of themselves. When we think about building grit in our students, setting goals with them can be an excellent tool.  Through goal setting, students can learn to prioritize and focus on what choices and behaviors will help them achieve their goals. Confidence is increased when they recognize that they can be successful in growing their heart, mind and spirit. We can support them by asking good questions.

What does God desire for us in the coming year?  What gifts and talents has he given each of us? How can I use these gifts to make this world a better place?   Do my goals align and support what God's calling me to be? Let us pray for our children and their future with the words God spoke to Jeremiah 29:11, "For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope."

2019 - 2020 School Year Enrollment
An email was sent on Monday, January 7th from our Admissions Office regarding the intent to continue enrollment for children currently enrolled in our Preschool and Pre-K Program.  It is critical that we receive your response by Monday, January 14 in order to continue your child's enrollment for the 2019/2020 school year.  If you do not respond by the due date, your child's seat will become available to new incoming students.  For those families confirming your current Preschool student returning for Pre-K for the 2019/2020 school year, a $475 Registration Fee, in order to hold the spot, will be due no later than Tuesday, January 22.  You may also access the Preschool and Pre-K Program Intent to Return by using this link.

A second email was also sent home for those wishing to enroll a NEW sibling not currently attending St. Francis School in Preschool - 8th Grade.  It is critical that we receive your response by Monday, January 14 in order to secure your child's enrollment for the 2019/2020 school year.  If you do not respond by the due date, your child will not be guaranteed enrollment.  Any available seats will be offered to new incoming students.  You may also access the Sibling Interest form by using this link.
Open House: January 27
Come celebrate your child's Catholic Education at our Open House on Sunday, January 27 from 9:30 am - 1:30 pm.  You won't want to miss this special day as we celebrate our school and showcase what makes St. Francis School such an amazing "home" for our visiting families.

In order to have a successful Open House, we are in need of some friendly parents to serve as tour guides during Open House. These parents play a critical role by serving as ambassadors to visiting families, welcoming them and answering questions. You are the face of St. Francis School to new families visiting us for the first time; it's an inspiring and fun role to play as you may be the one that helps a family make that important school decision.  Please visit our link to Volunteer Spot to view the opportunities available in the Open House section and sign up for a shift or two! Should you have any questions, please contact Tammy Clarida in our Admissions Office for more details.

In preparation for Open House, our parishes will be promoting St. Francis School and encouraging families to visit our Open House event by sharing more about our school at all the Masses the weekend of January 19 and 20, otherwise known as Promotional Weekend.

If you are one of our tri-parish families, you should have received an email from your parish liaison identifying some fun ways to get involved.  Please consider signing up to serve as an ambassador.  All St. Francis students should be dressed in full "Mass Uniform" when participating and/or attending Mass during Promotional Weekend.  All students dressed as ambassadors of St. Francis School, in school uniform, will earn a "Relaxed Dress" privilege for Tuesday, January 22.

PAB Corner
All over SFA, parents are volunteering in a multitude of various roles and in various locations. There are volunteers on the playground, parking lot, classrooms, kitchen, Father Seamus Center to name a few. I love to volunteer. Volunteering has helped me connect with other parents, make a difference, feel involved, use my skills in a productive way and contribute to my child's school. SFA requires 20 hour
of volunteer work from each family however, many parents are able to go beyond 20 with ease. I find volunteering at SFA is fun! I started at SFA 10 years ago helping to organize silent auction gifts. I have discovered there are a variety of volunteer opportunities from carline assistants to auction Chairs. An example of one of my best volunteer experiences would be auction. Working auction, whether it was manning tables to sell tickets or cleaning up after while laughing from the busy night was an amazing experience. I was able to make close friends and learn more about the school. I was also able to learn the names of a majority of parents from doing the seating chart to passing out fliers. This was beneficiary to my St. Francis experience because as I walked around the campus years later, I sustained connections that have had a profound effect on my family and children.

For Volunteer opportunities - contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Tammy Clarida by phone or email.

Epiphany Home Blessing:

The feast of the Epiphany was celebrated on January 6th. Bless your home with the inscription of the year and wise men above your doors in chalk: 20 + C + M + B + 19 and the following message:

Gather outside the front door.

Leader (Father of the family): Peace be to this house.

All: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial. From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial.

Pray the Our Father together.

Leader: Let us pray.

Bless, O Lord God almighty, this home, that in it there may be health, purity, the strength of victory, humility, goodness and mercy, the fulfillment of Thy law, the thanksgiving to God the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. And may this blessing remain upon this home and upon all who dwell herein. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.
The initials of the Magi and the year are inscribed upon the doors with the blessed chalk.

(The initials, C, M, B, can also be interpreted as the Latin phrase "Christus mansionem benedicat" which means "Christ bless this house".)
