Dear Parents and Guardians of St. Francis of Assisi School,

St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals, with many stories of his kindness affecting fish, birds, rabbits, and wolves.  He believed in the beauty and gift of God's creation and saw each creature as a blessing. There is a story of Francis journeying with his brothers and noticing a field with many varieties of birds.  He left his companions and decided to preach to the birds. His brothers noticed that the birds listened and remained attentive to his preaching about God's love for them. They flew off only when he finished his sermon.  Another story involves a wolf that was terrorizing a village - harming animals and people alike. Francis took a brother and journeyed beyond the city walls. When the wolf came to attack him, he spoke directly to the wolf calling him to repent and change his ways.  It is said that the wolf did not harm animals or people from that day forward and relied on the generosity of villagers for sustenance.

With our feast day this Friday, we are hoping to make a difference in the lives of animals.  Our 5th grade students have been collecting blankets and food to donate to the Orange County Animal Shelter, supporting their work of rescuing animals.  I have always enjoyed having dogs as I grew up and after having our daughter, we wanted to get a pet. She was very afraid of dogs until she was ten years old.  In fourth grade, she asked if we could rescue a dog that did not have a home. We went to SEAACA in Downey to adopt a dog that might be euthanized.  Our family fell in love with a scared, little dog that looked neglected, abused, and urinated if our voices were too loud. After several months of loving this dog unconditionally, Gryffindor has become a beloved family member. We decided to rescue a second dog, Dobby, as a companion for him.  We love the idea of saving an animal's life and feel that our lives have been richly blessed with this decision.

This Friday, our SFA families will have the same opportunity to change the life of an animal.  In the newsletter today, you will see that Painter, Hailey, Kunu, Arya, and Kobe are in need of a loving home.  Doggie Bonez is a non-profit, non-kill, rescue organization, who help to foster and find permanent homes for their fur babies.  If your family has been considering a pet, please invoke St. Francis as you prayerfully discern opening your heart and home to one of these dogs.

Pawfully Yours,

Jeannette Lambert
