Greetings!
Have you ever volunteered at the Patten Free Library? Volunteering can be a great way to give back and feel more connected to your community. And where is more connected than the Library? Read on to learn more about our current volunteer opportunities.

It is officially summer time! Did you know that before automobiles and highways became the main mode of travel, Mainers and visitors would travel up the coast and rivers by steamship? Here we see the Steamship Wiwurna docked in Bath, possibly on its way to Five Islands (Georgetown) or Boothbay Harbor! While steamships transported tourists and business people, it also gave coastal and island communities a quicker and easier link to the mainland and cities. In addition to photographs and postcards of steamships that provided local service, the History Room also has items associated with the infamous 1867 voyage of the Quaker City steamship. This trip was later memorialized in passenger Mark Twain’s Innocents Abroad.

The History Room will be closed Saturday, July 2.
Stay tuned for more programs from the History Room! We have some great speakers and programs lined up this summer. Are you interested in presenting a history lecture or workshop? Please get in touch with your ideas at [email protected]!

Happy Pride Month! All June long we have been featuring staff favorite LGBTQA+ titles. Of course there are too many great books to ever highlight them all, so we have compiled a list of a few more of our favorites.

Did you know that having a library card allows you to request items from almost any Library in Maine and receive it right here at Patten Free Library? Or that we can even request hard-to-find items from out of state libraries? Interlibrary Loan is an amazing service, providing you with access to millions of books and other resources from all over the country. If you are not familiar with how to request a book from another Maine library through our Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), or if you can’t find an item that you are searching for in a Maine library, please see a member of our Reference team at the Information Desk.
When an ILL comes in, we hold it at the circulation desk for a week for patron pickup. It is always a disappointment (because of the staff time and costs involved) to send an interlibrary loan back before it even checks out. Please be sure to pick up your interlibrary loans when you are notified of their arrival. If you can’t get in to pick up your item within a week, please call us and let us know so we can hold the loan a little longer.
