Greetings!
It's almost time for the Bath Book Bash! This is the second year the Patten Free Library has hosted the Bath Book Bash, but it's the first year the festival has been in person and we could not be more excited.
A true celebration of children's literature, this event features author panels, workshops, and more. There will be a range of children and young adult authors- from local favorites Maria Padian, Wendy Ulmer, and Jennifer Richard Jacobson to national bestsellers Rodman Philbrook, Dan Poblocki, and Chris Van Dusen. Books are available for purchase but all events and workshops are free! We are asking that everyone attending please wear a mask.
The Book Bash takes place on Saturday, September 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All events will be held outdoors in Library Park. For more information, including author lineup, visit bathbookbash.org or on social media @bathbookbash.
Can't wait to see you there!

Do YOU Have A Library Card?
We are excited to participate in Library Card Sign-Up Month. Created in 1987, this annual September campaign encourages every child to get their own library card. Here at Patten Free Library, we encourage anyone in Arrowsic, Bath, Georgetown, West Bath and Woolwich to get a library card. This unassuming card is packed with power. You can use it to check out books, eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, and DVDs from our collection. Nearly 60 other libraries participate in our Interlibrary Loan program, and your library card gets you access to an exponential number of materials. Did you know that you can also use your library card to check out an Orion telescope and astronomy binoculars? Or a ukulele? Your card allows you to bring home an American Girl doll or head out to a wonderful local museum. With a simple scan of your card, you can bring home some wonderful lawn games. Check out our website for more Unusual Things to Borrow. If you find yourself unable to visit the library, your card entitles you to Homebound Delivery Service. Best of all, your can get your library card for FREE and all of the above and more are exclusive benefits to cardholders. Get your card today and start exploring a world of opportunities!

History Room Live: Maine's First Ship
Happening Now!
Friday, September 10 at 4:00 p.m.
Rob Stevens of Maine’s First Ship will join us to share information about the effort to build a 51 foot reconstruction of the pinnace Virginia. The Virginia was built in 1607-1608 at the Popham Colony, located near the mouth of the Kennebec River. It was originally built to aid in coastal exploration and fishing, but was repurposed when the Popham colony was abandoned in October 1608 and was used to return some of the colonists to England. The building of Virginia is the beginning of Maine’s 400- year tradition of quality shipbuilding. The Virginia is expected to launch next year.
We’re very excited to welcome Rob back to Zoom after his popular Town History Series talks in 2020 and 2021!

1751 map of Woolwich now available on Maine Memory Network
A plat of a tract of land... is the title of this amazing historical resource, which shows an upside-down version of an area now known as Woolwich, Maine. The 1751 map is a copy of a copy of a 1740 map by Ben Johnson. By 1740, several families had already settled the area. Johnson's map was made, in part, to settle a dispute about ownership rights. Henry Ingalls made a copy at an unknown date, and our copy of Ingalls's version was made by an unknown transcriber in 1751.
Original property boundaries are described based on markers from nature: stones, red oak trees, white pines, a bunch of willows... The lots are laid out so that each could take advantage of water access of various kinds.
The map was given to the History Room in 2018 by Joan Dunton Strout, accession number 2018.1.10.1.

Late summer is the perfect time to laze around with a great book. While your definition of the perfect summer read may vary, we can all agree that August is a great time to pull up a comfortable chair, grab a cold drink, and sit back and relax.
This week's staff pick is brought to you Emily Read, Development Director. The Ghosts of Eden Park by Karen Abbott. has bootlegging, smuggling, and marriage gone awry! Could there be a better way to wrap up the summer?

"Sooo happy to hear [there is a bus from Morse High School to the Library]! PFL was such a huge part of my development as an adolescent, and I am so glad to hear that others will have the opportunity to have the library as a safe place to be with friends after school."
