1. Крстовдан. Овога дана празнују се два догађаја у вези са часним Крстом Христовим: прво проналазак часног Крста на Голготи, и друго повратак часног Крста из Персије опет у Јерусалим. Обилазећи Свету Земљу св. царица Јелена намисли да потражи часни Крст Христов. Неки старац Јеврејин, по имену Јуда, једини знаде место где се Крст нахођаше, па присиљен од царице изјави, да је Крст закопан под храмом Венериним, кога подиже на Голготи цар Адријан. Царица нареди, те порушише тај идолски храм, па копајући у дубину нађоше три крста. Док царица беше у недоумици, како да распозна Крст Христов, пролажаше мимо тога места пратња са мртвацем. Тада патријарх Макарије рече, да мећу на мртваца редом један по један крст. Када метнуше први и други крст, мртвац лежаше непромењено. А када ставише на њ трећи крст, мртвац оживе. По томе познаше, да је то часни и животворни Крст Христов. Метнуше га по том и на једну болесну жену, и жена оздрави. Тада патријарх уздиже крст, да га сав народ види, а народ са сузама певаше: Господе помилуј! Царица Јелена направи ковчег од сребра и положи у њ часни Крст. Доцније цар Хозрој освојивши Јерусалим, одведе многи народ у ропство и однесе Крст Господњи у Персију. У Персији Крст је лежао 14 година. 628. год. цар грчки Ираклије победи Хозроја и са славом поврати Крст у Јерусалим. Ушавши у град цар Ираклије ношаше Крст на својим леђима. Но на једанпут стаде цар и не могаше ни корака крочити. Патријарх Захарија виде ангела, који спречаваше цару да у раскошном царском оделу иде под Крстом и то по оном путу по коме је Господ, бос и понижен, ходио. То виђење објави патријарх цару. Тада се цар свуче, па у бедној одећи и босоног узе Крст, изнесе га на Голготу, и положи у храм Васкрсења, на радост и утеху целог хришћанског света.
2. Св. Плакила царица. Супруга цара Теодосија Великог. Била истинита хришћанка и по уму и по делима. Нарочито се одликовала помагањем бедних и болесних људи. Када су јој неки говорили, да се то не слаже с царским достојанством, она је одговорила: „царском звању приличи, да помаже новцем; моје пак личне трудове (око ништих) ја дајем Ономе који је благоизволео дати мени то звање.“ Упокојила се мирно око 400. год.
3. Преп. муч. Макарије Солунски. Ученик св. Нифонта патријарха у време, када се овај бавио на подвигу безмолствовања у Ватопеду. Макарије жуђаше за мучеништвом за Христа Господа, и умоли св. Нифонта за благослов. Прозорљиви патријарх видећи да је то воља Божја, благослови му пут на мучеништво. Макарије оде у Солун и у једној гомили Турака поче да говори о Христу као једином истинитом Богу. Турци га истуку и баце у тамницу. Кад су га извели на суд, Макарије викне Турцима: „о кад би ви познали истину и крстили се у име Оца и Сина и Св. Духа!“ Турци му одсеку главу 1527. год. У том часу св. Нифонт видео духом из Ватопеда и објавио монаху мученичку смрт Макаријеву говорећи: „знај, чадо, да је сабрат твој Макарије скончао данас мученички, и да се узноси на небо торжествујући и радујући се Господом. Молитвама његовим да се и ми удостојимо блаженства“.
4. Преп. Марија Тарсијска. Живела сасвим развратно. Два монаха путујући кроз Тарс одседну у гостионици, где Марија провођаше блуд. Када приступи монасима, они је укореше и одгурнуше као нечисту. Она се на једанпут покаја, и зарече се тога часа никад више не грешити. Монаси је узеше и одведоше у женски манастир, где се Марија до старости подвизаваше. Удостојила се чудотворства и за живота.

Расуђивање
Као што се свећа од свеће пали, тако и добро дело од доброга дела. Неки патриције хтеде поклонити цркви један златан крст, па позва младог и искусног златара, даде му много злато на меру и поручи му, да изради крст какав он жељаше. Сиромашни кујунџија видећи колику жртву чини патриције ради душе своје, разгоре се срцем према Богу, па се реши, те и он додаде оној гомили злата патрицијевог својих десет златника. Када крст би готов, патриције измери крст, и нађе, да је тежи од онога злата што он даде младићу. И одмах стаде да кара младића као лопова, подозревајући га, да је утајио нешто од његовог злата, и на место утајеног злата метнуо неки други тежак метал. Када младић виде патриција јаросна, он му онда исповеди своје дело. „Приложих, рече, и ја од мога злата, као она удовица две лепте, да бих примио с тобом награду од Христа.“ Чувши ово патриције разнежи се срцем и рече честитом младићу: „од данас те узимам као свога сина и наследника целог мог имања“.
Созерцање
Да созерцавам преступ Јеровоамов и казну Божју (I Цар. 13), и то:
1. како Јеровоам сали два телета златна и нареди народу да им се клања као боговима;
2. како пророк објави Јеровоаму негодовање Божје и чудесно расу олтар пред идолима;
3. како Јеровоам пружи руку на пророка, но рука му се осуши, и тек по молитви пророка оздрави.
Беседа
о истинитости сведочанства Христова
Ако ја свједочим сам за себе, истинито је свједочанство моје. (Јов. 8,14)
Светлост истинито сведочи кад сведочи о постојању сунца, и не лаже. Исто тако и Господ Исус истинито сведочи све што сведочи. Он је сишао међу људе као небески сведок, да посведочи постојање тројединог Бога, постојање света ангела и душа, љубав Божју према људима, Промисао Божји о људима, силу правде над неправдом, моћ истине над лажју, блажену бесмртност праведника и вечну муку грешника, васкрсење из мртвих, Суд Божји, и још много осталога, што су људи под велом греха само бледо наслућивали но нису знали
нити тврдо веровали. А пре свега да посведочи, да је Он Син Бога живога, раван Оцу Своме по бићу, сили и љубави, и раван Духу Божјем Светоме. Јер Сведок је морао прво посведочити Себе, да би се Његовим сведочанствима односно других тајни могло веровати. С гледишта чисте и непроменљиве истине свако је сведочанство Христово истинито, но с гледишта помрачених Јевреја оно није било истинито. За Бога, и ангеле Божје, и праведнике, и за вечност, и за време сведочанство је Његово истинито, за то Он и говори: истинито је свједочанство моје. Али за помрачене умове окорелих грешника то сведочанство није истинито, за то Он раније и рече Јеврејима: ако ја свједочим за себе свједочанство моје није истинито (5, 31). То јест: оно није истинито за вас Јевреје, у самој ствари оно је истинито само по себи.
О Господе преблагословени, Исусе Сине Бога живога и једини Спасе наш, избави нас од немоћи грешничкога ума и злобности грешничкога срца. Обасјај нас светлошћу речи Твојих, вечно истинитих. Теби слава и хвала вавек. Амин.

Exaltation of the Honorable Cross |

1. The Exaltation of the Honorable Cross. Two events in connection with the Honorable Cross of Christ are commemorated on this day: first, the finding of the Honorable Cross on Golgotha and second, the return of the Honorable Cross from Persia to Jerusalem. Visiting the Holy Land, the holy Empress Helena decided to find the Honorable Cross of Christ. An old Jewish man named Judah was the only one who knew where the Cross was located, and, constrained by the empress, he revealed that the Cross was buried under the temple of Venus that Emperor Hadrian had built on Golgotha. The empress ordered that this idolatrous temple be razed and, having dug deep below it, found three crosses. While the empress pondered on how to recognize which of these was the Cross of Christ, a funeral procession passed by. Patriarch Macarius told them to place the crosses, one by one, on the dead man. When they placed the first and second cross on the dead man, the dead man lay unchanged. When they placed the third cross on him, the dead man came back to life. By this they knew that this was the Precious and Life-giving Cross of Christ. They then placed the Cross on a sick woman, and she became well. The patriarch elevated the Cross for all the people to see, and the people sang with tears: ``Lord, have mercy!'' Empress Helena had a silver case made and set the Honorable Cross in it. Later, the Persian Emperor Chozroes conquered Jerusalem, enslaved many people, and took the Lord's Cross to Persia. The Cross remained in Persia for fourteen years. In the year 628 the Greek Emperor Heraclius defeated Chozroes and, with much ceremony, returned the Cross to Jerusalem. As he entered the city Emperor Heraclius carried the Cross on his back, but suddenly was unable to take another step. Patriarch Zacharias saw an angel preventing the emperor from bearing the Cross on the same path that the Lord had walked barefoot and humiliated. The patriarch communicated this vision to the emperor. The emperor removed his raiment and, in ragged attire and barefoot, took up the Cross, carried it to Golgotha, and placed it in the Church of the Resurrection, to the joy and consolation of the whole Christian world.
2. Saint Placilla, The Empress
Placilla was the wife of Emperor Theodosius the Great. In mind and deed, she was a true Christian. She was especially distinguished for helping the needy and the sick. When some people told her that this was not consistent with imperial dignity, she replied: ``It becomes the imperial calling to assist with money; however, in my personal efforts concerning the poor, I give to Him who deigned to give me this calling.'' She rested peacefully in about the year 400.
3. The Venerable Martyr Macarius of Thessalonica
Macarius was a disciple of Patriarch Niphon when the latter was laboring in stillness at Vatopedi [on Mount Athos]. Macarius longed to be martyred for Christ the Lord, and begged St. Niphon for his blessing. The clairvoyant patriarch, seeing that this was the will of God, blessed his path to martyrdom. Macarius went to Thessalonica and, in a crowd of Turks, began to speak about Christ as the One True God. The Turks beat him and threw him into prison. When they brought him to trial, Macarius cried out to them: ``Oh if you only knew the truth, and were baptized in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit!'' The Turks beheaded him in 1527. At that very moment, St. Niphon saw this in the spirit and told a monk of Macarius's death by martyrdom, saying: ``Know this, my child, that today your brother Macarius died a martyr's death and is borne to heaven, celebrating and rejoicing in the Lord. May we, by his prayers, be made worthy of blessedness.''
4. The Venerable Maria of Tarsus
She lived a life of total debauchery. Two monks traveling through Tarsus stayed at the inn where Maria plied her trade. When she approached the monks, they rebuked her and pushed her aside as unclean. She suddenly repented, and vowed never to sin again. The monks took her to a convent, where Maria lived a life of asceticism until old age. She was made worthy of working miracles even during her lifetime.

Reflection
Just as a candle is lighted from another candle, so also a good work is born from a good work. A patrician wanted to donate a gold cross to a church. He summoned a young but experienced goldsmith, gave him a great deal of gold that he weighed out, and told him to fashion whatever sort of cross he desired. The poor goldsmith, seeing what a large donation this patrician was making for the sake of his soul, became inflamed with love for God in his own heart, and decided that he would add his own ten pieces of gold to the amount of the patrician's gold. When the cross was completed, the patrician weighed it, and discovered that it was heavier than the gold that he had given to the young man. He immediately began to scold the young man as a thief, suspecting that he had taken some of the gold and replaced it with some other heavy metal. When the young man saw the patrician so angry, he confessed his deed. He said: ``I added from my gold, as the widow gave two mites, in order to receive Christ's reward with you.'' Hearing this, the patrician's heart was touched, and he said to the honorable young man: ``From this day, I take you as my son, and the heir of all my goods.''
Contemplation
Contemplate the transgression of Jeroboam and the punishment of God (I Kings 12, 13):
1. How Jeroboam cast two golden calves and ordered the people to worship them as gods;
2. How the prophet declared God's displeasure to Jeroboam, and miraculously broke the altar before the idols;
3. How Jeroboam raised his hand against the prophet, but his hand withered, and only after the prayers of the prophet was it made whole again.
Homily
on the truthfulness of Christ's witness
Though I bear record of Myself, yet My record is true (John 8:14).
The light witnesses truthfully when it witnesses to the existence of the sun, and it does not lie. In the same way, the Lord Jesus witnesses truthfully to all that He testifies. He descended among men as a heavenly witness, to affirm the existence of the Triune God, the existence of the angelic world and of men's souls, the love of God for men, God's providence toward men, the power of justice over injustice, the might of truth over falsehood, the blessed immortality of the righteous and the eternal torment of the sinners, the resurrection from the dead, the Judgment of God and many other things that men-under the veil of sin-only felt as a faint premonition, but did not know of or strongly believe in. Most of all, He witnessed that He is the Son of the Living God, equal to His Father in Essence, power and love, and equal to the Holy Spirit of God. For the Witness had to witness first to Himself, so that by His witnessing to other mysteries, He could be believed. From the point of view of a pure and immutable truth, every witness of Christ is true; but from the point of view of the darkened Jews, it was not true. For God, and the angels of God, and the righteous ones, and for eternity, and for all time-His witnessing is true, and that is why He also said: My record is true. But for the darkened minds of the hardened sinners, this witness is not true. That is why He said to the Jews earlier: If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true (John 5:31). In other words; ``It is not true for you Jews, but in essence it is true in and of itself.''
O Most-blessed Lord Jesus, Son of the Living God and our only Savior, deliver us from the weakness of a sinful mind, and the wickedness of a sinful heart. Illumine us with the light of Thy words, eternally true.
To Thee be glory and praise forever. Amen.

А кад Га видеше главари свештенички и момци, повикаше говорећи: Распни га, распни. Пилат им рече: Узмите га ви и распните, јер ја не налазим на њему кривице. Одговорише му Јевреји: Ми имамо закон и по закону нашем ваља да умре, јер начини себе сином Божијим. Кад, дакле, Пилат чу ову реч, побоја се већма. И опет уђе у судницу, и рече Исусу: Одакле си ти? А Исус му не даде одговора. А Пилат Му рече: Зар мени не говориш? Не знаш ли да имам власт распети те, и власт имам пустити те? Исус одговори: Не би имао власти никакве нада мном кад ти не би било дано одозго; зато онај има већи грех који ме предаде теби.

И онај натпис читаше многи од Јевреја; јер место беше близу града где разапеше Исуса; и беше написано јеврејски, грчки, латински.
А стајаху код крста Исусовог мати Његова, и сестра матере Његове Марија Клеопова, и Марија Магдалина. А Исус видевши матер и ученика кога љубљаше где стоји рече матери својој: Жено! Ето ти сина! Потом рече ученику: Ето ти матере! И од оног часа узе је ученик к себи. Потом, знајући Исус да се већ све сврши, да се збуде писмо рече: Жедан сам.
А кад прими Исус оцат рече: Сврши се. И приклонивши главу предаде дух. А будући да беше петак, па да не би тела остала на крсту у суботу (јер беше велики дан она субота), Јевреји молише Пилата да им пребију ноге, па да их скину. Онда дођоше војници, и првом дакле пребише ноге, и другом распетоме с Њим. А дошавши на Исуса, кад Га видеше да је већ умро, не пребише Му ноге; Него један од војника прободе Му ребра копљем; и одмах изиђе крв и вода. И онај што виде посведочи, и сведочанство је Његово истинито; и он зна да истину говори да ви верујете.

Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.” Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?” Jesus answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!” Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led Him away. And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.
