1. Свети пророк Илија.
Боговидац, чудотворац, ревнитељ вере Божје, св. Илија би родом од племена Аронова из града Тесвита, због чега је прозват Тесвићанин. Кад се Илија роди, отац његов Савах виде ангеле Божје око детета, како огњем дете повијају и пламен му дају да једе. То би предзнамење Илијиног пламеног карактера и његове богодане силе огњене. Сву младост своју провео је у богомислију и молитви, повлачећи се често у пустињу, да у тишини размишља и моли се. У то време царство јеврејско беше раздељено на два неједнака дела: царство Јудино обухватајући само два племена, Јудино и Венијаминово, са престоницом у Јерусалиму, и царство Израиљево обухватајући осталих 10 племена са престоницом у Самарији. Првим царством владаху потомци Соломонови, а другим потомци Јеровоама, слуге Соломонова. Највећи сукоб имаше пророк Илија са Израиљским царем Ахавом и његовом опаком женом Језавељом. Јер ови се клањаху идолима и одвраћаху народ да служи Богу јединоме и живоме. При том још Језавеља као Сиријанка, наговори мужа те подиже храм Сиријскоме Богу Ваалу, и одреди многе свештенике на службу томе лажном богу. Великим чудесима Илија доказа силу и власт Божју: он затвори небо, те не би кише три године и шест месеци; спусти огањ с неба и запали жртву Богу своме, док жречеви Ваалови то не могоше учинити; сведе кишу с неба молитвом својом; чудесно умножи брашно и уље у кући удовице у Сарепти, и васкрсе јој умрлог сина; прорече Ахаву, да ће му пси крв лизати, и Језавељи, да ће је пси изести, што се и догоди; и друга многа чудеса учини и догађаје прорече. На Хориву разговараше с Богом и чу глас Божји у тихом светлом поветарцу. Пред смрт узе Јелисеја и одреди га за наследника у пророчком звању; својим огртачем пресече воду у Јордану: и најзад би узет на небо у огњеним колима са огњеним коњима. На Тавору јавио се заједно с Мојсејем Господу нашем Исусу Христу. Пред крај света опет ће се Илија јавити, да сузбије силу Антихристову (Откр. 11)
2. Свети Илија патријарх Јерусалимски и свети Флавијан патријарх Антиохијски.
Велики ревнитељи вере и бранитељи Православља. Умрли обојица у изгнанству куда их прогна јеретички цар Анастасије. Тачно провидели смрт цара Анастасија и своју. Истовремено писали су они један другом, из удаљених места: „Анастасије цар данас умре, пођимо и ми на Суд Божји с њим.“ И после два дана оба светитеља скончају, 518. године.
Огњени човече, пророче Илија,
Што на земљи сјајем небесним просија
И молитвом својом Господу угоди –
Та затвара небо, с неба огањ своди,
Све помоћу Божје деснице прејаке:
Ти караше људе због вере им млаке:
Ти ревнова силно за Бога Живога –
Па те црква слави к’о пророка свога.
Цар те не устраши, царица још мање,
Господ Бог је твој цар, и твоје имање.
Нит о јелу брину нити о пијењу,
Ти сав предан беше Божјем Провиђењу.
Без страха од никог, ти страх беше свима.
К’о лав силни што је страх малим мишима.
Ти ревнова силно за Бога Живога –
Па те црква слави к’о пророка свога.
Прослави те Господ као мало кога
Јер и ти прослави Господа Живога:
Огањ Бог ти посла да упалиш жртве;
Силу Он ти даде да васкрснеш мртве.
Дела твоја моћна сав свет задивише,
Пророчанства твоја сва се испунише,
Ти душом и телом беше жив и цео,
Зато смрт немаше у теби удео.
Пророче огњени, и духом и телом –
Слава! кличемо ти са душом веселом.
РАСУЂИВАЊЕ
Пишући о животу своје сестре св. Макрине св. Григорије Ниски устеже се да набраја чудеса њена, „да не будем, вели виновник греху неверовања немоћних људи.“ Он назива немоћним оне који не верују. И заиста, ништа немоћније нема од човека без вере. Безверник верује у моћ мртвих ствари и мртвих стихија природних, но не верује у моћ Божју нити у моћ људи Божјих. То је тупост духовна, а та тупост равња се са смрћу духовном. И тако живе душе верују а мртве неверују. Живе душе верују у моћна чудеса пророка Илије; њих та чудеса радују и храбре, јер оне знају да је то пројава моћи Божје. Кад Бог пројављује своју моћ кроз мртве ствари и стихије, како да је не пројављује кроз живе и свете људе? Оно што нарочито радује верне јесте то што се пророк Илија јавио жив на гори Тавору, у време преображења Господњега.
У грчком Синаксару стоји описано следеће чудо св. пророка Илије: неки Пајсије, игуман манастира св. пророка Илије у Јерусалиму, дође у Цариград, и из Цариграда оде до Београда, у време када се тамо бавио патријарх Пајсије. У то време живео је у Бепграду један православни хришћанин, који је имао Латинку за жену. На дан св. Илије хоћаше ова жена да умеси хлеб, а муж јој рече: “Данас је празник пророка Илије, и не треба радити“. Но жена му одговори, да је тај празник прошао пре 10 дана (према календару паписта). И тако се изроди свађа међу њима. Упорна жена замеси тесто, но гле чуда! Тесто у њеним рукама претвори се у камен. На то чудо се сабраше суседи, и сваки узе по један део тога камена. И Пајсије се ту догоди, па и он узе један део камена, као сведочанство чуда Божјега, и однесе собом у Јерусалим. Тај камичак обеси Пајсије пред икону св. пророка Илије у свом манастиру (Синаксар се позива на Доситејеву XII књигу, глава II, параграф 2. страна 1192).
За живота на земљи овај велики пророк давао је доказе постојања јединог и живога Бога, а по смрти, и то после неколико стотина година, својом појавом на Тавору дао је људима јаван доказ живота после смрти.
СОЗЕРЦАЊЕ
Да созерцавам чудесну помоћ Божју у ратовима Израиљевим (V Мојс. 2-3), и то:
1. како Мојсеј победи незнабожачке цареве, Сиона Аморејског и Ога Васанског, јер Бог обрече ове на пропаст;
2. како Мојсеј не може да узме земљу Моавску, јер Бог то не хтеде због потомства праведнога Лота;
3. како уопште победе и порази у ратовима не бивају без допуштања Божјег.
БЕСЕДА
о личном сведочанству апостола
„Ово је син мој љубазни, који је по мојој вољи.“
Овај глас ми чусмо гдје сиђе с неба кад бијасмо
с њим на светој гори. (II Пет. 1, 17-18)
Чујмо сведоке верног и истинитог, који на крст би распет због сведочанства свога. Чујмо апостола Петра, који што не може доказати речима доказа смрћу својом крвавом на крсту будући распет наопако од незнабожаца. Он сведочи, да је био на светој гори, т. ј. гори Таворској, онда када се Господ преобразио, када се јавио Мојсеј с Илијом, и када се чуо глас с небеса: ово је син мој љубазни, који је по мојој вољи. На овоме месту апостол не говори, што су он и његови другови видели на гори светој – то је речено у Јеванђељу – него понавља само оно што су чули. Оно што су чули исто је тако важно као и оно што су видели. Нека чују, дакле, народи, да апостоли видеше Господа Исуса преображена у чудесној светлости небеској и нека знају, да је Он – Син Божји. Нека чују још народи, да апостоли видеше живе Мојсеја и Илију, и нека знају, да постоји живот после смрти и Суд Божји. Нека чују још, да је Господ Исус назват Сином Божјим не од људи него од самога Бога Оца. Верни су и истинити сведоци, који ово говоре народима, и саопштавају оно што њихове очи видеше и њихове уши чуше. Ко не верује апостолима, тај верује Јуди, Кајафи, Ироду и Нерону, гонитељима апостола и издајницима истине. Ко не верује праведницима, томе не остаје друго него поверовати неправедницима. Ко не верује чистима, тај мора поверовати нечистима. Ко не верује страдалницима за истину, тај мора поверовати мучитељима и развратницима. Дан сваки не свиће ни зашто друго него да се људи определе за једне или за друге.
О Господе спаситељу и Просветитељу наш, просвети душе наше речима Твојим светим, за које апостоли Твоји пострадаше. Теби слава и хвала вавек. Амин.

THE HOLY PROPHET ELIJAH
Saint Elijah, one who saw God, a miracle-worker and a zealot for faith in God, was born of the tribe of Aaron from the town Tishba for which he was called the Tishbite. When St. Elijah was born, his father Savah saw an angel of God hovering around the child, wrapping the child in fire and giving him a flame to eat. That was a foreshadowing of Elijah's fiery character and his God-given fiery power. He spent his entire youth in godly thoughts and prayers withdrawing frequently into the wilderness to contemplate and to pray in solitude. At that time the Jewish kingdom was divided into two unequal parts: the kingdom of Judah consisting of only two tribes, the tribes of Judah and Benjamin with their capital in Jerusalem and the kingdom of Israel consisting of the remaining ten tribes with their capital in Samaria. The first kingdom was governed by the descendants of Solomon and the second kingdom was governed by the descendants of Jeroboam, the servants of Solomon. The greatest confrontation that the prophet Elijah had was with the Israelite King Ahab and his evil wife Jezebel. For they, Ahab and Jezebel, worshipped idols and were turning the people away from serving the One and Living God. Before this, however, Jezebel, a Syrian, persuaded her husband to erect a temple to the Syrian god Baal and ordered many priests to the service of this false god. Through great miracles Elijah displayed the power and authority of God: he closed up the heavens, so that there was not any rain for three years and six months; he lowered a fire from heaven and burned the sacrifice to his God which the pagan priests of Baal were unable to do; he brought down rain from heaven by his prayer; miraculously multiplied flour and oil in the home of the widow in Zerepath, and resurrected her son; he prophesied to Ahab that the dogs will lick up his blood and to Jezebel that the dogs will consume her flesh, all of which happened as well as many other miracles did he perform and prophesy. On Mount Horeb, he spoke with God and heard the voice of God in the calm of a gentle breeze. Before his death he took Elisha and designated him as his successor in the prophetic calling; by his mantle he divided the waters of the Jordan river; finally he was taken up into the heavens in a fiery chariot by flaming horses. He appeared on Mount Tabor to our Lord Jesus Christ together with Moses. Before the end of the world St. Elijah will appear again to put an end to the power of the anti-Christ (Revelation, Chapter 11).

SAINT ELIJAH, THE PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM AND SAINT FLAVIUS, THE PATRIARCH OF ANTIOCH.
Saint Elijah and Saint Flavius were great zealots for the Faith and defenders of Orthodoxy. They were driven into exile by the heretical Emperor Anastasius where they both died. They precisely foresaw the death of Emperor Anastasius as well as their own death. Simultaneously they corresponded with each other from afar: "Anastasius the emperor died today, let us both go before the judgment of God with him." After two days both saints died in the year 518 A.D.
HYMN OF PRAISE
SAINT ELIJAH THE PROPHET
Fiery man, the Prophet Elijah,
With heavenly radiance, glowed on earth
Pleased the Lord with your prayers
You closed the heavens and from heaven brought down fire,
All with the help of God's All-powerful right hand;
Because of their lukewarm faith, you rebuke men;
For the Living God, you diligently labored
And, as its prophet, the Church celebrates you.
The king did not frighten you and the queen even less,
Your king and your possession, the Lord God is.
Neither about food nor about drink did he worry.
To God's Providence, you were completely devoted
Without fear of anyone, you were a fear to everyone.
As a powerful lion who is a fear to small mice.
For the Living God you diligently labored
And as its prophet, the Church celebrates you.
As so few, the Lord glorified you
For the Living God you glorified:
To ignite sacrifices, God sent you a fire;
To resurrect the dead, power He gave you.
The entire world, your powerful work amazed,
All your prophecies were fulfilled,
With soul and body, you were alive and whole,
That is why death did not have any part in you.
Both in soul and body, fiery prophet
Glory to you! We exclaim with a joyful soul.
REFLECTION
Writing about the life of his sister St. Macrina, St. Gregory of Nyssa hesitates to enumerate her miracles, "that I not be," says he, "responsible for the sin of unbelief among helpless men." He calls helpless, those who do not believe. Truly, there is nothing more helpless than a man without faith. The man without faith believes in the power of dead things and dead elements of nature and does not believe in the power of God or in the strength of the men of God. That is spiritual dullness and that dullness is equated with spiritual death. Thus, the living souls believe and the dead souls do not believe. Living souls believe in the powerful miracles of the Prophet Elijah. These miracles give them courage and joy, for they know that they are a manifestation of the might of God. When God manifests His might through lifeless things and elements of nature, why then would He not manifest it through living and holy men? That which especially gives joy to the faithful is that the Prophet Elijah appeared alive on Mount Tabor at the time of the Transfiguration of the Lord. During his life on earth, this great prophet gave proof of the existence of the One and Living God and, after his death, and even after several hundred years, by his appearance on Mt. Tabor, he gave to mankind visible proof of life after death.
CONTEMPLATION
To contemplate the miraculous help of God to the Israelites in battle (Deuteronomy 2):
1. How Moses defeated the pagan kings, Sihon of the Amorites and Og, king of Basan, for God promised that they would perish;
2. How Moses was unable to take the land of Moab, for God did not want this because of the descendants of the righteous Lot;
3. How victory and defeat in wars generally do not occur without God's permission.
HOMILY
About the personal witness of the apostle
"This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with Him in the holy mount" (2 Peter 2:17-18).
Let us hear the testimony of the true and faithful one who was crucified on a cross because of his testimony. Let us hear the Apostle Peter who, what he was unable to prove by his words, proved by his bloody death on the cross, crucified upside down by the pagans. He testifies that he was on the holy mountain, i.e., Mount Tabor when our Lord was transfigured, when Moses with Elijah appeared and when a voice was heard from heaven saying: "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased" (2 Peter 1:17). In this text, the apostle does not speak of what he and his companions saw on the holy mountain, which is narrated in the Gospel, but repeats only that which they heard. That which they heard is just as important as that which they saw. Therefore, let the people hear that the apostle saw the Lord Jesus transfigured in a miraculous heavenly light and let them know that He is the Son of God. Let the people also hear that the apostles saw Moses and Elijah alive and let them know that life after death exists as well as the judgment of God. Let them also hear, that the Lord Jesus is called the Son of God, not by man, but rather by God the Father Himself. Those who speak these words to the people and relate to them what their eyes saw and what their ears heard are faithful and true witnesses. He, who does not believe the apostles, believes in Judas, Caiaphas, Herod and Nero, the persecutors of the apostles and traitors of the truth. He who does not believe in the righteous ones has no other alternative left but to believe in the unrighteous ones. He who does not believe in the pure ones, must believe in the impure ones. He who does not believe in those who suffer for the truth, must believe in the torturers and libertines. Day does not dawn for anything else except that men may take sides with one or the other.
O Lord our Savior and Enlightener, enlighten our souls by Your holy words, for which Your apostles suffered.

So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.’” Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way.
