John was first the chief minister to Caliph Abdul-Malik and later a monk in the Monastery of St. Sava the Sanctified.
Because of his ardent defense of the veneration of icons during the reign of the iconoclastic Emperor Leo the Isaurian, John was maligned by the emperor to the Caliph, who cut off his right hand. John fell down in prayer before the icon of the Most-holy Theotokos, and his hand was rejoined and miraculously healed.
Seeing this miracle the Caliph repented, but John no longer desired to remain with him as a nobleman. Instead, he withdrew to a monastery, where, from the beginning, he was a model to the monks in humility, obedience and all the prescribed rules of monastic asceticism. John composed the Funeral Hymns and compiled the Octoechos (The Book of Eight Tones), the Irmologion, the Menologion and the Paschal Canon, and he wrote many theological works of inspiration and profundity. A great monk, hymnographer, theologian and soldier for the truth of Christ, Damascene is numbered among the great Fathers of the Church. He entered peacefully into rest in about the year 776 at the age of 104.
Obedience, coupled with humility, is the foundation of the spiritual life, the foundation of salvation and the foundation of the overall structure of the Church of God. The great John Damascene-great in every good thing-as a monk left a deep impression on the history of the Church by his exceptional example of obedience and humility. Testing him one day, his elder and spiritual father handed him woven baskets and ordered him to take them to Damascus and sell them there. The elder established a very high price for the baskets, thinking that John would not be able to sell them at that price but would have to return with them. John, therefore, firstly had to go on a long journey; secondly, he had to go as a poor monk to the city where he, at one time, had been the most powerful man after the Caliph; thirdly, he had to seek a ridiculously high price for the baskets; and fourthly, should he not sell the baskets, he would have made this enormous journey, there and back, for nothing. In this way, the elder wished to test the obedience, humility and patience of his famous disciple. John silently prostrated before the elder and, without a word, took the baskets and started on his journey. Arriving in Damascus, he stood in the market place and awaited a buyer. When he told the interested passers-by the price of his goods, they laughed at and mocked him as a lunatic. He stood there the whole day, and the whole day he was exposed to derision and ridicule. But God, Who sees all things, did not abandon His patient servant. A certain citizen passed by and looked at John. Even though John was clad in a poor monk's habit and his face was withered and pale from fasting, this citizen recognized in him the one-time lord and first minister of the Caliph, in whose service he had also been. John also recognized him, but they both began to deal as strangers. Even though John named the all-too-high price of the baskets, the citizen purchased and paid for them without a word, recalling the good that John Damascene had once done for him. As a victor, holy John returned to the monastery rejoicing, and brought joy to his elder.
O Gracious God, forgive us our past sins and protect us from future sins. O Merciful God, have mercy on all Thine innocent creatures, who suffer because of us, and ease their suffering.

Најпре први министар калифа Абдалмелеха, а потом монах у манастиру Светог Саве Освећеног. Због ватреног заступања иконопоштовања у време иконоборног цара Лава Исаврјанина, оклеветан би Јован од овога цара код калифа, који му одсече десну руку. Он припаде на молитву пред иконом Пресвете Богородице, и рука му се састави и зарасте чудесно. Видећи то чудо, калиф се раскаја, но Јован не хте више остати код њега као великаш, него се повуче у манастир, где беше од почетка узор монасима у смерности, послушности и свима прописаним подвизима монашким. Испевао посмртне песме, саставио Октоих, Ирмологију, Месецослов, Канон пасхални, и написао многа богословска дела, с надахнућем и дубином. Велики као монах, и као песник, и као богослов, и као војник истине Христове, Дамаскин се рачуна у велике Оце Цркве. Упокојио се мирно око 776. године у стотину четвртој години свога живота.
РАСУЂИВАЊЕ
Послушност са смерношћу основ је духовног живота, основ спасења, основ и свеколиког устројства Цркве Божје. Велики Јован Дамаскин, велики у свему доброме, оставио је као монах дубок траг у историји Цркве својим изванредним примером послушности и смерности. Његов старац, духовни отац, кушајући га једнога дана, уручи му исплетене котарице и нареди да их носи чак у Дамаск и тамо прода. Одреди старац котарицама врло високу цену мислећи да их Јован по ту цену неће моћи продати, него да ће их морати вратити. Јован је, дакле, требало прво, да иде на далек пут, друго, да иде као бедни монах у град, где је он некада био најмоћнији човек после цара, треће, да тражи за котарице цену смешно високу, и четврто, да ако котарице не прода, бадава учини огроман пут тамо и натраг. Тим начином хтео је старац да искуша и послушност и смерност и стрпљење свога славног ученика. Јован се поклони старцу ћутке, и без икакве примедбе узе котарице и крете на пут. Стигавши у Дамаск, он је стао на пијац и чекао купца. Када је заинтересованим пролазницима рекао цену своје робе, они су му се насмејали и наругали као безумноме. Цео дан је стајао и цео дан је био изложен подсмеху и порузи. Но Бог, који све види, не остави стрпљивога слугу Свога. Неки грађанин прође и загледа се у Јована. И мада Joвaн беше у бедној раси монашкој, и у лицу од поста исушен и ублеђен, познаде тај грађанин у њему негдашњега великаша и првог министра царског, код кога он беше у служби. Познаде и Јован њега, но и један и други ступише у погодбу као непознати. Иако Јован рече превелику цену котарицама, грађанин купи и плати без речи сећајући се добра, које му некад Дамаскин учини. Kao победник врати се Јован свети у манастир ликујући и донесе радост старцу своме.

What is your reading of it?” So he answered and said, “’You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Рече му пак: Право си одговорио; то чини и бићеш жив. А он хтеде да се оправда, па рече Исусу: А ко је ближњи мој? А Исус одговарајући рече: Један човек силажаше из Јерусалима у Јерихон, па га ухватише хајдуци, који га свукоше и изранише, па отидоше, оставивши га пола мртва. А изненада силажаше оним путем некакав свештеник, и видевши га прође. А тако и Левит кад је био на ономе месту, приступи, и видевши га прође. А Самарјанин некакав пролазећи дође над њега, и видевши га сажали му се; И приступивши зави му ране и зали уљем и вином; и посадивши га на своје кљусе доведе у гостионицу, и устаде око њега. И сутрадан полазећи извади два гроша те даде крчмару, и рече му: Гледај га, и шта више потрошиш ја ћу ти платити кад се вратим. Шта мислиш, дакле, који је од оне тројице био ближњи ономе што су га били ухватили хајдуци? А он рече: Онај који се смиловао на њега. А Исус му рече: Иди, и ти чини тако.
