A Note From Pastor Steve
The New Year is already two weeks old - how are your resolutions?  So much happens so fast that we can lose focus and fail to live into our stated goals.  Life happens as the saying goes and before we know it, we have left another year littered in the rear view mirrors of our lives while we move on unchanged for the better.  As a church family I want to help us set our focus on the primary person who has the ability to bring transformational change to bear upon our character. Of course I am talking about Jesus! Starting this week and taking us up to the beginning of Lent, we will spend time hearing from Christ and delving into his teachings.  Principally we will be studying parables that teach us about the essential nature of the Kingdom which Jesus initiated and lived into - the Kingdom of God that we are invited to live into now. These Parables changed the lives of the original hearers two-thousand years ago, and they have that same power today.
Listed below are the stories along with where you can find them in the Bible.  Please take some time each week reading ahead and developing your own thoughts on what Jesus is trying to say.  Come Sunday and see if the preacher gets it right!

1/13   Jesus Walks on Water/Calms the Storm, Matthew 14:22-33
1/20   Parable of the Sower, Matthew 13:1-23
1/27   Parable of the Wheat and Weeds, Matthew 13:24-30
2/03   Parable of the Hidden Treasure, Matthew 13:44-46
Parable of the Wedding Banquet, Matthew 22:1-10
2/10   Parable of the workers in the Vineyard, Matthew 20:1-16
2/17   Parable of the Unforgiving Servant, Matthew 18:21-35
2/24   Parable of the Good Samaritan, Luke 10:25-37
3/03   Parable of the Wineskins, Luke 5:33-39
Parable of the Mustard Seed, Luke 13:18-19

This series is called “Riddles of Grace, The Parables of Jesus.”  Hope to see you Sunday,

Life Groups and Table Talk resume January 16th!
Life Groups resume for the Spring Semester THIS WEDNESDAY, Jan. 16th ! We believe that investing in a Life Group is essential to growing as follower of Jesus in daily life. Make 2019 the year where you keep your promise to God and to yourself to live faithfully. Join a Life Group!

  • If you have a group - GREAT! Come get re-connected on Wed.!
  • If you need a group - GREAT! Follow this link https://goo.gl/forms/BeojpzsJ0DvEGWJ92 to join a group. Then, come be our guest for dinner on Wed. When groups disperse at 7:00 p.m., Anita will meet with all the folks who want to join a group and get you started.
  • If you were in a group, but stopped going - THAT’S OK. Come on back and reconnect on Wed.!
  • If you need a new meeting night, etc - THAT’S OK. Come Wed. night and we’ll find you a new group.
  • If you’re curious, but afraid….THAT’S OK. Come check it out!

We’re experimenting with a new format for the spring. Here’s how the evening will go…

6:00-6:35 Dinner
6:40-7:00 Worship Songs and Short Teaching Time
7:00-8:00 Break for Life Groups discussion
** nursery for pre-K kids will be open 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Life Group discussions will be based on Wednesday’s teaching, rather than following the Sunday morning sermon series. There will be a variety of teachers and tons of fun! Groups that meet on other nights will have access to the teaching video from Weds. to use if they choose.  See you Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.!
Table Talk resumes THIS WEDNESDAY, Jan. 16th at 6:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center Gym. Join us for a delicious and inexpensive meal, connect with your friends, and enjoy a break from the usual cooking or take-out. We believe community bonds build when we eat together. If you’re off to choir practice, or can’t stay for Life Groups, that’s OK. It’s fine to eat, enjoy good conversation, and be on your way. We keep the cost really low….$4 per person/$15 per family MAX price (pay cash or check at the door, or pay online). That’s cheaper than most fast-food, for a great home-cooked meal. NEVER let cost be a barrier for your family. If you can pay a little, that’s fine. If you can’t pay at all, that’s fine too. Come and eat, the table is always open and there’s always enough for everyone. No need to sign up - just show up.  Come to the table - we saved a seat just for you!

Dear congregation of Denver United Methodist,
Your generous donation is already at work meeting people’s needs as they recover from the devastation brought about by Hurricane Florence. Recovering is a long, daunting process; but, gifts like yours enable this mission to fulfill its commitment to continue providing for those in recovery as well as for others with unmet spiritual, nutritional, and developmental needs.

Upward Basketball is back in Denver!
The Denver Community is thrilled to have Westport Baptist Church re-start the Upward Basketball program – it was greatly missed! Help is needed to support the program and it would be great to have other local churches help keep it around. Last Saturday approximately 300 were in attendance. WBC needs some help filling volunteer spots. All games are on Saturdays through Feb. 23rd (9am-1pm).  Can you help?

  1. Half-time devotionals (5 minutes) – This is a great opportunity to share God’s word with a variety of people in all walks.
  2. Crowd control – There are many unsupervised children running around the building. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are able to help please contact Gregg Baines at  gabaines44@gmail.com  or 252-373-2704.
