Project Welcome Mat Details Announced
Opportunities for Local Businesses to
Reach Incoming IUP Students & Parents

Please join us as we put out the Welcome Mat for parents of incoming IUP students during Freshman Orientation. A total of 2800 parents will attend Freshman Orientation sessions during the months of April, June and July.

Unlike last year, orientation sessions will take place entirely on campus (though parents will be given the option of a community tour). This is in response to feedback from parents who wanted more time devoted to topics such as financial aid. However, there are still opportunities for local businesses and organizations to actively welcome new students and their families to our community and acquaint them with all that we have to offer.

During the month of April – there will be two orientation sessions.
  • A total of 410 welcome bags will be prepared for parents and you can elect to put an item such as a pen, coupon or flyer in the bags. In order to have time to prepare the bags, we will need your item delivered to the Indiana County Tourist Bureau by March 28 – no exceptions. So that we can prepare adequately please email info@visitindianacountypa.org if you plan to participate.

During the months of June & July there will be 12 orientation sessions.
  • For these sessions, we will be preparing a coupon book to distribute in the welcome bags. Participation is free but we have to have your commitment by April 17. Please contact John Buckshaw at the Indiana Gazette (724-465-5555 or jbuckshaw@indianagazette.net) to make your commitment. John will work with each business on creating a coupon. All coupons will expire on June 30, 2019 – no exceptions. Space is limited to 50 coupons –please get your reservation in early.
  • If a coupon is not appropriate for you or you would like to include an additional item in the bags, you may still do so. You will need to provide 2400 of the item and have it to the Indiana County Tourist Bureau by May 1 – no exceptions. So that we can prepare adequately please email info@visitindianacountypa.org if you plan to participate.

Please note that participation in Project Welcome Mat is free but limited to those who are a member of the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce, the Indiana County Tourist Bureau, or Downtown Indiana .

Project Welcome Mat  is an initiative of the Indiana Area Collaborative Team (IACT) in partnership with IUP, Downtown Indiana, Indiana County Tourist Bureau and the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce.

We thank you for your support of this effort!

Sincerely,

Linda Mitchell, Executive Director, Downtown Indiana
Denise Liggett, Executive Director, Indiana County Tourist Bureau

What drew you to joining the board of Downtown Indiana?
As a resident and business owner in Indiana, I have always been interested in how to keep our downtown area vibrant and welcoming. I was already involved in many Downtown Indiana events as a volunteer and was ready to become more involved as a board member.
On what DI committees/event committees do you serve?
I am on the promotions committee and I chair the Wine Walk event committee.

What is your favorite thing about downtown?
I love the variety of local businesses that are available in our downtown area including a candy store, great restaurants, coffee shops, flower shops, clothing stores. Our downtown makes it easy to support local businesses. I have always found downtown to be a wonderful place to connect with old friends and to meet new ones.

Name a fun fact that people may not know about you?
As a travel consultant, I have been to many places around the world. One of the most surprising favorite locations for me has been Turkey. I enjoy baking, especially during the holidays, and one Christmas season, I baked 199 dozen cookies!
