Wine of the Week (WOW!):  Decoy Merlot, Napa Valley 2009

Merlot received an unfairly bad reputation after a fun little movie called "Sideways" was released a few years back. Historically though, Merlot is a fantastic food wine and does not deserve to suffer such scorn.  To help prove this point, we are presenting a tasty little gem for your enjoyment this week: Decoy, a project from legendary Merlot producer Duckhorn Vineyards.  This selection shows how Merlot, when cultivated with a deft hand, can be a very complex and alluring choice of wine. Decoy is certainly a shining example deft handed production, but also of practiced wine making pedigree. The best way to sum-up this wine is "smooth and supple."  Touting a solid backbone with nicely integrated tannins, the notes of plums and red cherries present themselves in a pleasant way that works towards a nice mouth filling quality ending in a medium to medium long finish. The Decoy would work well with grilled pork chops, red meats, and slightly hearty fare. Last week, we celebrated the end of summer with a balanced California chardonnay, this week, we are saying "We know you're coming Autumn!" with this delicious beauty.

Cheers and drink well!

New and Notable

Nelson's "Belle Meade" Bourbon - You can look forward to many great whiskies from the revived Nelson's Greenbriar distillery. Charles Nelson originally created it in 1853, and his great-great-great grandsons Charlie and Andy have restarted working at the distillery and bottling their family's whiskey. The bourbon has a high rye concentration, so it's a rich and spicy whiskey.

Whistle Pig Rye - This 100 proof/100% rye is produced at Whistlepig Farm in Vermont by Dave Pickerell, former Master Distiller at Makers Mark, and has received both five stars from Paul Pacult and the highest whiskey rating ever from Wine Enthusiast at 96 points. It's a beautiful whiskey, and a must have for any whiskey connoisseur!

Duck Rabbit "Hoppy Bunny" Black IPA - Duck Rabbit is definitely the dark beer specialist for the South, and their most recent bottle addition showcases eight separate hop additions offer delicious bitterness and beguiling hop aroma/flavor. Heavily represented among these hops are Chinook, which provides deep pine and sticky citrus components and a New Zealand hop called Motueka, from which we get bright fruit and spearmint notes.

The Double L. P. Initiative - We are still running our Lowest Legal Price initiative on Fernet Branca and PBR Tall Boys, so come get some! Any cheaper, and it really would be illegal.
