Wednesday Lent Dinners/Worship

Begin Tonight

The season of Lent has begun, a time of preparation for Easter. Three faith practices are historically associated with Lent: fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. On Wednesday evenings for the next five weeks, we will encounter all three.

Fasting is not necessarily giving up food and drink altogether, but instead being intentional with how we eat and drink. That's why our 5:30 supper is a simple meal, a few homemade soups and bread to share. The simplicity is intentional, turning us towards moderation and solidarity with those who hunger.

Prayer is central to our 6:30 worship service and follows the church's historic pattern of daily prayer at certain hours. The hours included in our worship books are Matins in the morning, Vespers in the evening, and Compline at night. Unlike our weekend services of Holy Communion, there is no sermon. Instead, we engage the Word through contemplation, turning us towards prayer for the needs of the world.

Almsgiving is generosity with no expectations in return. All the offerings we gather on Wednesday evenings during Lent are designated for ELCA World Hunger. Sharing our resources with others means entrusting those gifts to God's work through the larger church, turning us towards seeing and serving Christ in others.

Congregation Council Elects Officers

At their first meeting with new members following the congregation’s Annual Meeting, the Congregation Council elected the following officers of the congregation, pictured clockwise from top, left:

Andy Steenrod, President; Kim Haigh, Vice-President; Susan Bakken, Treasurer (appointed by Council); Secretary, Ron Londre’. (positions listed in error previously)

Thanks to all of them for their willingness to serve!

Turn Up The Vote

Tue. March 3, 5:00 PM

Rich Glasenapp, from the Racine Interfaith Coalition, will present "Turn Up the Vote". This is a non‑partisan effort which focuses on neighborhoods throughout Racine where voter turnout is low. The goal is to assure that as many people as are eligible, understand what is required to vote, and feel comfortable exercising that right.

Democracy works best when all who are entitled to vote, do so. Rich will explain the various volunteer opportunities, tell us how it is all organized, and encourage us to participate. There are many volunteer opportunities including making phone calls, writing post cards, stuffing envelopes, delivering information, tabling, and canvassing.

A question and answer time will follow his presentation.

Please plan to join us at MPLC on Tuesday, March 3rd at 5:00 p.m. in Mygatts!

If this time does not work for you, but if you are interested in more information, contact Donna Braaten, Beyond Welcome Team Leader.

Scam Alert!

Time for another reminder! Your pastors will NOT contact you individually to ask for your help/contribution to an urgent ministry need. A member recently believed she was texting with Pastor Beth Ann and ended up losing money in a scam. This is a recurring, common, seemingly unavoidable scam via email or text, and unfortunately one that becomes increasingly more difficult to detect. When in doubt, ALWAYS contact the church office to confirm whether a communication is legit!

Practicing Faith: "With Bells On"

Blog by Karen Magee

Sharing the stories of how MPLC folks practice their faith

Music has always been an integral part of worship for me, and I’ve sung in church choirs for most of my life, beginning as a child. However, when I came to Mount Pleasant in 1989, I was delighted (and a little surprised) to be invited to join the Senior Bell Choir. This was a whole new musical endeavor for me and I must admit, I was pretty terrified of leaping into it. But I did, anyway.

Now, well over 35 years later, I can tell you that playing bells with this wonderful group of people has been and still is one of my greatest joys in being a member of MPLC and participating in worship. When I first started as a “ringer,” it was heartening to have those who were much more experienced and at ease with playing bells help me along. I do hope that as new people have joined the bell choir over the years they’ve felt the same consideration from me.

When you think of it, playing in a bell choir is really a team sport. Every ringer is important and every single bell is needed. Most of us are responsible for four bells (or musical notes if you prefer), and some of us more. We all work together to present to the congregation music that is uplifting and beautiful. It is definitely a “united we stand” undertaking. We’ve learned not only to just ring the bells, but also to add special effects such as thumb damps, martellatos, tower swings, malleting, ring touches, and more. Some of these effects are easier to execute than others, but we always give it our best effort and are always encouraged by our stellar director, Greg Schroeder.

Over time the people involved in the Bell Choir have changed, but the camaraderie and goodwill that we enjoy has always prevailed. We work together, support each other, and most importantly, we trust each other. We’re very proud of our five-octave bell collection, a collection that has grown bit by bit over time, as well as our set of chimes and our newest acquisition, the bell tree for the biggest bells. And while it’s wonderful to have these beautiful instruments to play, it’s the members of the choir for whom I have such love and admiration, as together we pool our efforts to ring out music to the glory of God.

Besides her participation in the Bell Choir and Senior Choir, Karen is also active with the MPLC book club, as a counter, with Project Day, Open Table, and the Beyond Welcome Team. Ask Karen to learn more about any of these church activities!

Adult Ed for Lent

"How Lutherans Interpret the Bible"

Sundays at 10:20 AM in Mygatts

Rev. Dr. Mark Allan Powell is an ELCA pastor, emeritus seminary professor, and a prolific writer and sought-after speaker on the New Testament. For the next four weeks, we will listen in on his video presentations about where the Bible comes from, how to interpret it in context, and how we are to understand the Bible for our own times. He does not prescribe “the Lutheran way" to read the Bible nor does he dismiss the way you may have come to understand the Bible. Instead, Dr. Powell presents a variety of Lutheran perspectives for interpreting the Bible.

Join Pastor Beth Ann this Sunday to dive deeper into scripture!

If you missed last Sunday’s Session One presentation, you can watch it at the link below.
