"Practicing Faith"

Fighting Racism

Sharing the stories of MPLC folks who practice their faith in various ways

"How to Fight Racism"

by Jemar Tisby—A Book Study

It is easy for me to “talk the talk”, but much more difficult for me to “walk the walk”. What would Jesus want me to do? What is required of me as a Christian? These questions are discomforting. So when the opportunity to co-lead a book study on racism presented itself, I had some trepidation. Racism is a highly charged topic. Would anyone even sign up?

No need to worry! Twelve to fifteen members of our congregation attended regularly for ten weeks to begin a personal journey toward racial justice. They gave up Monday evenings to tackle a problem that is more relevant today than it has been since the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. When the topic became overwhelming, we were always reminding each other we are “planting seeds” and “opening doors”. Or, as someone in our group said, “Remember that an elephant can not be eaten in a single bite. It takes many small ones.”

I received much more than I gave to this study group. I felt a tremendous sense of community and fellowship. The Holy Spirit was clearly with us. Each week brought surprise and amazement at the openness of group members and the constant flow of ideas. Group members generated opportunities to learn outside the group. Some of us attended a prayer vigil. We listened to a James Baldwin interview. We heard a powerful personal story of reconciliation. We plan to visit Christian Faith Fellowship Church. We are sharing a meal together at a minority owned business. The opportunities keep presenting themselves!

Faith without action is just words (James 2:17). “Just because you are in the garage, doesn’t make you a car,” a group member said.  As a congregation we do a number of activities including Open Table, Community Meal, Little Free Food Pantry, support of Neighborhood Camps, and support of Holy Communion Food Pantry. What is our commitment when the group ends? Can we add to what is already being done and specifically target racial justice? We have generated many ideas, all the way from individual efforts, to more systemic ideas like participating in voter registration. Who knows where this may lead us! Some may simply be more aware of the challenges the marginalized face and go no further. Others may become more active in addressing some of the inequalities. For sure, all of us will be able to greet each other by name and have meaningful conversations together. This is a worthy outcome, all on its own.

I learned there is a lot of interest in learning more about the plight of the marginalized in our community. I am encouraged to get more involved because I know there are others who will be right there beside me, holding me up. Alone we can accomplish little, but together we can work to make a difference. And we are called by Christ to do this.

Linda Lehrmann and Donna Braaten finished the book study on November 17, but welcome connecting with others at MPLC who are interested in the work of combating racism. Please reach out to them!

Inclement Weather Reminders

As the weather turns colder, here are a few reminders!

  • In the event RUSD cancels school due to weather events, the church will also cancel activities for that day, and church staff will work from home.
  • Cancellation of worship services will be determined by 2:30 PM Saturday and 7:45 AM Sunday. Factored in will be parking lot and road conditions, and the recommendations of local authorities on travel.
  • In the event that worship services are cancelled, a notice will be emailed to our Weekly News email list. A notice will also be posted on our Facebook page. We will also try to list the closing on TV stations WISN and WTMJ.
  • Regardless of whether church activities take place or not, please use your own judgment whether the roads to MPLC are navigable for you. God and your pastors don’t want you to risk your life to get to church!
  • Please don’t leave valuables (like keys) in your coat pocket hanging in the narthex…our doors remain unlocked during worship services.

"Vivaldi's Women" Movie Viewing

Sunday Dec. 7, 10:20 AM

On Sunday, Dec. 21, the MPLC choir and instrumentalists will perform a Christmas cantata, Gloria, composed by Antonio Vivaldi. For the education hour on Sunday, Dec. 7th, our choir will host a viewing of a BBC documentary about Vivaldi, the history of this piece, and Vivaldi’s “unique creative relationship with a group of women that lasted for 36 years.” The documentary is about an hour long. You are invited to join us to learn the fascinating story of this beautiful piece we will enjoy later in December!

(Note: there will be no Adult Education program offered this Thanksgiving weekend.)

MPLC Mission Endowment Fund

Grant Awards for Fall 2025

The MPLC Mission Endowment Fund Board is pleased to announce the recipients of grant awards from our Fall 2025 cycle:

  • A scholarship for Carthage College student, Marin Haigh.
  • CPR/AED training for MPLC Safety Team members.
  • Support for Meals on Wheels and the Holy Communion Food Pantry.
  • A donation to Habitat for Humanity.
  • A grant for Christmas gift bags for MPLC homebound members.

The Endowment Fund is composed of designated contributions, bequests, and memorial gifts given for this purpose throughout the years. Contributions are always welcome and may be made through green envelopes in the pews or online.

The mission of this fund is to provide a lasting source of financial support for extraordinary mission outreach—the "seed money" that helps fund new programs, ministries, and special projects that our regular budget cannot cover. It's another way to bring the mission of our church to life!

PHOTOS OF THE WEEK

Karen Krey and Susan Bakken purchased items for and packed 25 Christmas gift bags that will be given to homebound members. This ministry was provided through a grant from MPLC's Mission Endowment Fund."

This past weekend, we were fortunate to have Fendrick & Peck with us, for both Sunday morning worship and a Sunday afternoon concert in the Fellowship Hall. Madeline Fendrick and Brian Peck are part of MPLC's extended family, as Brian grew up in the congregation and his parents, Bob and Kathy, are active members.

They play a variety of historic acoustic instruments, draw upon lots of poetry and imagery from nature, and tell tales of their adventures along life's journey. We are grateful for their music during our Offertory and Postlude, and we are blessed by their reminders of our commonalities as children of God.
