Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

From the Rector's Desk...

This Sunday’s Gospel reading is a little strange for two reasons:

First, the baptism of our Lord is observed in the liturgical calendar on the first Sunday after Epiphany.

Second, historically baptism is associated with Easter, not the onset of Lent.

So why are we hearing this now? I believe the biggest reason is to remind us that despite the strong emphasis we place during this season on self-awareness, personal spirituality, and our own moral decisions, this season is not about us. It is about Jesus Christ. Ordinary time, like Epiphany and especially Pentecost? Then we can talk about our role as the body of Christ. But this season is about what Christ, and his crucified body, gave to us. His baptism is often seen as the beginning of his earthly ministry, and in a few shorts weeks we will get to the end of it, scripturally speaking.

So while it isn’t wrong of us to continue to see Lent as a penitential time for us, our penitence is not the active agent in our spiritual life. It is the moment of which Jesus said, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

Yours in Christ,
Fr. Rob+

TEST Tidbits – Origins of the Coronavirus

There are a multitude of theories out there about the origin of the coronavirus and now varieties of COVID-19 that have caused so many deaths, lingering illnesses, economic disturbances and social upset. Researchers and scientists have been able to develop several vaccines, medicines and procedures that will, eventually, bring this pandemic under control. There are lingering questions of how this virus began and, further, did climate change have anything to do with it?

The true answer is, we do not know for certain yet. But we must prepare for the next pandemic and consider climate change in our predictions.

Learn how climate change makes viruses more available to cross over from animals to humans in the full TEST article.

Earth steward action: Help educate those around you to lean into scientific theories more than non-science based theories. Scientific theories lead to better adherence to safe measures such as mask wearing and social distancing – all of which we must continue until we eventually reach herd immunity.

Mug of Coffee
Coffee Hour

There have been requests to have a Coffee Hours after our Sunday Service, so we will have our first of 2021 after the 10:30 a.m. service on Feb. 28. The meeting will be over Zoom, and it's planned for the last Sunday of each month until we are able to meet in person. Join your fellow Trinitarians to say hello and share new happenings.
News From Nepal

Hello from the village! Things are going well here – thank you for the prayers. The construction on the new women's sewing center is underway, and today they started putting up the exterior walls onto the iron frame(photo above). The contractor is coming to the village tomorrow to inspect the progress. I am hopeful that the building will be completed in the next 1-2 weeks.

I will not be here during that time, as Friday I am headed to Kathmandu for our TEAM annual meeting (online) and a much needed break, but I plan to return to the village on March 15 with all the supplies needed for our women's group to complete production of the 700 sanitary pad kits that we need for this year's school distribution. They have completed approximately 350 kits so far, with 350 left to go. God willing, the school program is scheduled to happen over the last two weeks in April and the first week in May. Please keep praying for that program and all the logistics that go into it.

On a more personal note, I am excited to celebrate my dog Kancha's fourth birthday tomorrow (Thursday)! He has been such a sweet friend these past four years and has brought more companionship and comfort to me than I could have thought possible.

I can't wait to give him a lovely day. First, we will go to the store and buy candies to pass out to all of the villagers. In Nepal, it is the custom for a person to give candies to others on their own birthday. We did this a couple of years ago, and the villagers loved it. They thought it was hilarious to get candy from Kancha. Then we will have a party with my Nepali family, and they will cook him his very own chicken dinner. He is going to be a happy boy! That's all for now.

Have a great week and God bless you!
—Karin
