Welcome to First Congregational U.C.C. in Pasadena

"Spirituality, Justice, Welcome"

Our "Interim" Minister, Rev. Dr. Sandy Tice, is here as our partner in searching for a new "Installed" Minister. She will lead us through history and identity work, delve into the values and skills we hope to find in our new person. Meanwhile, we hope to see all of you in the days and weeks ahead as we meet the changes and challenges of our community, country and beyond. See below for worship details, service opportunities such as local Protests, stocking shelves at the Food Pantry, preparing Union Station meals, and upcoming events.

Communion Sunday

Scripture Readings
New Revised Standard Version (Updated Edition)

Psalm 121

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—

   from where will my help come?

2 My help comes from God,

   who made heaven and earth.

3 Who will not let your foot be moved;

   The One who keeps you will not slumber.

4 The One who keeps Israel

   will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Holy One is your keeper;

   And your shade at your right hand.

6 The sun shall not strike you by day

   nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;

   And will keep your life.

8 Our God will keep

   your going out and your coming in

   from this time on and forevermore.

Genesis 12:1-3

1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Reflection

“Lift Your Eyes”

“Self-care is an act of faithful stewardship whereby we graciously and gratefully tend to the health and well-being of the divine gift that is our lives…. [T]he practice of self-care… resists the powers and principalities of a hyper-capitalist system.”

Sacred Self-Care by Chanequa Walker-Barnes

We do not know where we are going. ‘Lifting our eyes’ helps to steady us,

helps us recognize who guards and guides us.

THOUGHTS from REV. SANDY

Fasting and Feasting through Lent

Lent is a season of self-reflection and preparation for Easter. It is connected to repentance (or ‘turning’), and the three traditional practices are fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. This year we will consider the theology and practice of ‘fasting’.

Fasting, rightly understood, can be a great gift to us (a gift the Church can offer to our culture of excess!) It is permission to take a break from what is not useful, a doorway to freedom and rest.

We will consider fasting from habits that are harmful (or addictive), from ‘shoulds and oughts’ and self-judgement, and from the relentless pace of our Capitalist and technology-driven culture. We fast or refrain in order that we might be free to feast as those who know where their treasure is, as those who are unafraid, as those who will not be put to shame.

Fasting can be a way to return us to ourselves, to restore our connection with God, to prepare us for deep and real rejoicing. Fasting can reconnect us with God’s vision for us: joy, abundance, and delight.

HISTORY WORKSHOP

After Worship * Sunday March 15, 2026 * Light Lunch

Part of our Interim Work

Understanding the history of our Church is essential to the interim process. It allows us to see patterns (for better or for worse), see our current church culture in context, take what we need or love from the past - but leave the rest. On March 15th after worship we will have a light lunch and delve into an exploration of what brought us to this time and place.

It will be fun, revelatory, healing, helpful in finding the right new minister(s).

Rev. Sandy and Rev. Anne will co-lead this process.

See you there!!!

P.S. Our centennial history of the church, Kept by Grace, was created in 1986.

If you have an update written since then, please let us know!!

Women's Scholarship Time is Here!

Application will be uploaded to the website in the next week or so.

Deadline is March 31st

Sacred Self-Care:

Daily Practices for Nurturing Our Whole Selves

by Dr. Chanequa Walker-Barnes

The Season of Lent is here. In these tumultuous times, not to mention this season of transition in our own congregation, spiritual and emotional self-care are necessary. We are invited to read this book and later in Lent, after worship, we can have a check-in conversation about how we are all doing.
