Scripture Reading

New International Version (NIV)

Luke 24:13-35

13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19 “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body.

They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

Reflection

“It’s The Week after Easter… Now What? Tell the Good News, Tell Your Story”

"It’s The Week after Easter… Now What?” is answered by our calling to tell the good news of hope after the Resurrection. One gospel-sharing practice is through personal storytelling. That is, to share something personal that inspires others to think and to feel. Jesus knew the power of stories through parables. Those lessons have lasted over millennia and transcend differences among people. Neuroscientists discovered what Jesus already knew: the human brain is designed to receive and retain messages found in stories. What better way to share the good news of redemption? Scripture for this message is drawn from the story of Jesus’ disciple, Cleopas, who relied on mortal thinking about the savior. Jesus walked incognito to hear what stories would be told. Jesus is still listening. What stories are we telling today when perception rattles our truth? Where there are people, there are stories. Those stories make the good news come alive.

Thoughts from Rev. Sandy

“… Like Wheat Arising Green!"

What a great and joyous Easter celebration! We ran out of bulletins, which is such a lovely problem to have!

New faces, old friends - the chapel was full and the singing was beautiful! Connie prepared such wonderful music and we were blessed and our hearts were lifted.

The congregation was gracious in helping me declare that “the Worst Thing//is NEVER the Last Thing”, and our time with the children really did elicit Easter Acclamations of surprise and delight with butterflies winging their way out of hymnals, and children from infants to college kids joining in.

These are difficult days in our culture and in the world. To have spaces where we can celebrate, love one another, and recognized again that God is loving and healing here and now: well, that is a great gift we can offer the world. Like the flowers blooming everywhere we look, love and grace are rising up in your congregational life. It was a delight to share Resurrection Joy with you.

During Eastertide (known as the Great Fifty Days) we will continue our Easter work of Interim reflection, and listening for the Call of the Risen Christ to this Community of Faith. Let’s keep reaching toward the Light, as the hymn puts it: “...like wheat arising green!"

SCNC Annual Gathering Registration is open, friends!

Please join us May 29-30 at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, in the heart of the City of Angels. This year’s theme is, “We’re the Ones!” (that God is waiting for). Volunteer in the FUMC

Community Pantry

Volunteering is a wonderful way to participate in the ministry of First United Methodist Church and give back to the community. One of our most impactful services is our Community Pantry.

The pantry is open every Tuesday from

10 a.m. to noon

@ 500 E. Colorado Blvd.

Our volunteers typically serve between 40 to 50 of our neighbors here in Pasadena who are experiencing food insecurities. It would not be possible to help so many people without our dedicated volunteers.

There are a number of ways you can help with the mission of the pantry.

  • Hand out food on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. until noon.
  • Run our coffee cart and chat with our clients during distribution.
  • Reset our pantry inventory on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.
  • Share your ideas: If you see an opportunity to help in a different way, share your ideas with our pantry manager: Suzi Lohr

Click HERE to sign up for a volunteer slot.

No experience volunteering is required. We will help you learn all you need to know. Volunteering at the pantry is a rewarding experience and a blessing to those who benefit from your generosity.
