February 3, 2017
Sunday, February 5
Worship Service  -  9:15 and 11:00am
"Are You Your Work"
This month's theme of identity begins with exploring the question "Are you your work?" The idea of vocation is often misunderstood to be question of employment, but it goes deeper. Continuing the conversation begun in "The Meaning of Ministry," we will explore what it means to be called to serve the world in your unique way. Rev. Bret Lortie speaking.

Religious Education

All begin in the sanctuary for the first part of the worship service before going to classes.  Starting time for the sixth-seventh-eighth grade class to watch this week's movie is 10:30am. Sunday, Februrary 12, 9:15 and 11:00am
"Marriage that Works"
What does it take to form a lasting marriage partnership with another? Romance is nice. Common interests are nice. But these are not what will keep you going toward what songwriter Patty Griffin calls a "mad mission" to the finish line. Maintaining our personal identity while opening ourselves to the language of another's heart are keys to a lasting union. Rev. Bret Lortie speaking.

Sunday, February 19, 9:15 and 11:00am

From the Faith in Action Minister faithinaction
Rev. Scott Aaseng
I'm thrilled to join you at UCE as your interim Faith in Action Minister! Uniting the communal and spiritual grounding of religious community (Faith) with public expressions of our values (Action) has been a central theme throughout my life, and is one the main reasons I became a UU.

I have alternated between working for peace and justice in the public arena--resisting registration for the draft, co-leading a community-based youth organization in Chicago, networking across the country for an exhibit showing the human cost of war--and working in faith communities--on college and seminary campuses in the U.S. and South Africa, as a musician at Third Unitarian and other churches, as a minister on the Southwest Side of Chicago, in Oak Park and Quincy, IL and Hobart, IN--and now here! From the Board of Trustees bot
"The Board Wants to Hear from You"

Submitted by Kerry Heckman

This year the Board of Trustees set the following goal: "Increase Congregational Linkage Through Communications"

Our original intent was for us to communicate more to the congregation, through media such as the newsletter. Then, we realized communication goes two ways and we'd like to invite the congregation to communicate with us.

The recent Presidential election may have some of us questioning, "Who does the government actually work for?" The government is supposed to work for us. That is the purpose of the Board of Trustees. We are here to work for you. We are here to understand and bring about your vision for the church. Click here to read more.
How do the yoga sutras intersect with and diverge from Unitarian Universalist principles? (How) do these philosophies apply to contemporary yoga practice and contemporary life?  Although yoga is most often recognized by its physical postures (asanas), practitioners may also use breathing techniques (pranayama), meditation, chanting, and dietary restrictions.  Historically, yoga was more of a philosophy for living than an exercise regimen, including ethical guidelines for personal growth.   We will use Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, considered one of the foundations of classical yoga practice, as our historical touchstone and Michael Stone's book The Inner Tradition of Yoga as a way of connecting the sutras to contemporary life.  Suitable for practitioners, those considering becoming practitioners, and those who are interested in learning about the practice that is becoming widespread in the United States, including two classes weekly at UCE.  Facilitated by Jessica Tomell Presto, UCE member and certified yoga instructor. Click here to register.

Composting at UCE compost
You may have noticed and wondered about the two green containers at the southeast corner of our church parking lot.  They are vital links in UCE's commitment to caring for our green planet by diverting waste from our landfills.

You can easily become a part of this commitment for a small annual contribution of $60 per person (up to a $180 maximum per household).  If you are interested in joining this movement, contact the church office (by mail or in person), or fill out this form and email it to Carli Magel, or return it to the church office. For an additional $10, we will provide you with your very own kitchen counter composting bucket.  (Plastic bags are not acceptable containers because they are not compostable.)

If you have any questions about this program, please contact Compost Program Coordinator John LaPlante at church or through the church office.
