July 15, 2018: Creating a New Republic of the Heart

Our global crisis-environmental, economic, political, and cultural-has reached a tipping point that challenges us, collectively and personally, to awaken to the heroic goodness that resides in our hearts.

Terry Patten is an author, teacher and (r)evolutionary who reminds us that we each contain an untapped reservoir of latent inner and outer nobility. He challenges us-no matter what happens in the years ahead-to allow ourselves to come, truly and deeply, face-to-face with ourselves and one another.

He will address us as spiritual activists, with specifics of what we must do, and, more important, how we must be in order to co-create the change we want to see in the world. (Copies of his new book will be available.)
July 22, 2018: Participation Service

The Participation Service has its roots in the Quaker Meeting. There is quiet music with introductory words in the beginning, and quiet music at the end, but in between, the silence is broken only by individuals sharing thoughts and feelings that are significant to them. When others are speaking, listen with love. If you respond to others, be sure to let them know that you have understood what they have said, whether or not you agree. It is preferable to speak out of your own feelings and experiences, therefore talking in terms of "what I feel" rather than "what people feel." Silence is preferred to a time-filling conversation.

Dick Park is a retired social worker and long-time member of this congregation.

Autumn Auction Donation Ideas - October 6
The Autumn Auction will take place at the UUCM church on Saturday, October 6, 2017, 5:30-9:00 p.m.  The rough scheduling is:  5:30-7:00 for silent auction and social hour
(hors d'oeuvres, drinks); 7:00-8:30 for live auction and potluck dinner; 8:30-9:00 check out.
Meanwhile, start thinking about what goods and services you or your friends might donate for the auction; also what businesses might be asked to donate.   Here are some ideas:   SPECIAL EVENT (use of vacation home, hike with lunch, catered meal or picnic, magic show, take kids to a museum or zoo).    LESSONS (cooking, piano, dancing, painting, golf, fishing, etc).    MONTHLY SPECIALS (casseroles, desserts, fruit, pet treats, etc). HELP AT HOME (garden, yard, odd jobs, handy work, remove clutter, taxes next spring, walking the dog, etc). PERSONAL ITEMS (artwork, music or dance performance, antiques).
Poetry Corner

There are friends and then there are friends
Those you meet at work and church
Those you want to go out for coffee with
Those you can always ask for a favor.

And there are those you don't see for years
But connect with immediately when you do
Like you were never apart.

There are those friends you met in grade school
And played dolls and hopscotch with
But still check in every year with a Holiday Letter or whenever something important happens to you.

There are your college roommates who you still see periodically or Skype or email
As if 40 years haven't past.

There are friends who are always there in times of need - divorce, deaths, illness
Or times of celebration - job promotions, weddings, births
There are friends who don't need to ask you "what's wrong"
They just know
There are friends you can share a long car trip with
Enjoying the same music, the same roadside diners, the same parks

There are friends you can call at the last minute to get together
And then friends you have to make plans with well in advance.

Then there are Facebook friends who can be your real friends or just casual friends.
You can share important things or funny things or beautiful photos.

Friendship is an important part of life from when we are small until we grow old.
Whether we have new friends or old friends
We can be enveloped in a friend's cocoon of love.

Roy Zimmerman at UUCB, August 4
Roy Zimmerman's ReZist, August 4 at 8 pm at the UU Church of Berkeley
ReZist is ninety minutes of Roy Zimmerman's original songs, a funny and forceful affirmation of Peace and Social Justice. "Sometimes I think satire is the most hopeful and heartfelt form of expression," says Roy, "because in calling out the world's absurdities and laughing in their face, I'm affirming the real possibility for change."
Roy's songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime, and his videos have garnered tens of millions of views.  He has recorded for Warner/Reprise Records.  He's shared stages with Bill Maher, Ellen DeGeneres, Holly Near, Robin Williams, Arlo Guthrie, John Oliver, Kate Clinton and George Carlin, and tours the country constantly with his wife and co-writer Melanie Harby. He has played in all 50 states, mostly in UU churches.
