From our Members: Pediatric Ophthalmology Associates Why is a pediatric ophthalmologist important for a child’s first eye exam?

Pediatric ophthalmologists are specially trained to diagnose, treat and manage all children’s vision and ocular health problems. A child’s visual development plays an important role in his or her capacity to learn and to socialize with others. The longer a vision problem goes undiagnosed, the more difficult it can be to treat. This is why prompt diagnosis, treatment and early intervention from a pediatric ophthalmologist is essential to help children reach their full visual potential and ensure healthy visual development!

A pediatric ophthalmologist has extensive training which enables them to recognize subtle signs of vision problems or problems with the health of the eye. Babies and young children cannot articulate changes to their vision. Pediatric ophthalmologists specialize in blocked tear ducts, pediatric cataracts, amblyopia, strabismus, refractive errors and so much more! Many of these conditions can be missed without a fully dilated eye exam by a pediatric ophthalmologist. Children found to have healthy eyes and perfect vision do not need annual eye exams. A pediatric ophthalmologist will guide parents as to when their child should have another complete eye exam.

Pediatric Ophthalmology Associates, Inc. has twelve pediatric ophthalmologists who specialize in complex eye problems from birth on. They also take care of children with medically complex problems that can have associated eye problems. Many problems are inherited, and if there is a strong family history of an eye or vision problem, children should be referred early for evaluation.
