The CMA participates in a statewide coalition of medical societies that tracks and coordinates activities on public policies issues.
At the most recent meeting of this "House of Medicine" coalition, the issue of systematic downcoding was brought up as something of increasing concern among payer issues in some areas of the state.
Downcoding challenges are not new, but to help gauge the breadth and depth of these current reports, each specialty and local society was asked to reach out to members to identify practices that feel downcoding is growing and becoming more comprehensive.
The Ohio State Medical Association is going to coordinate follow-up communication for the details from any practice that identifies this challenge and it willing to share their experiences. Depending on the findings of this outreach effort, OSMA is anticipating including these practices in the follow-up work to shape the next steps to respond to the problem.
If your practice has information to share and would like to be included in this effort, please contact Lisa Oyer at the Columbus Medical Association. We will follow up to get you connected to this statewide effort.
