Youth Advisory Council Explores Central Ohio's Health Inequities Through a Unique Game of Monopoly

“You can’t really know where you are going until you know where you have been,” Maya Angelou.

This insight came to life during the CMA Foundation’s Youth Council meeting on Tuesday. While these bright students already factor social determinants of health into their grantmaking, exploring Central Ohio's policy history gave them a deeper understanding of how long-term inequities have impacted health and wellness. This lesson was vividly illustrated through an intentionally “unbalanced” game of Monopoly, led by Derek Burtch, co-founder of Erase the Space. The evening was both engaging and educational. Click here to view photos from the evening.

Do you know or are a parent of a student looking to make an impact on the health and wellness of youth in our community? The Youth Council has openings! Open to students aged 13 to 18, the council has awarded over $263,000 in grants since 2001 to support youth health and wellness initiatives. Members gain valuable grantmaking experience and the opportunity to collaborate with peers—an experience that stands out on college and training program applications.
