Meet the CMAA CEO Candidates
Dr. Robert Falcone is preparing to end his tenure as CEO of CMA and Affiliates by the end of 2024. Through his leadership, CMAA has thrived and even added an additional affiliate, Made for Medicine, this year. We are poised to continue our significant impact on the health of the community.
Selecting an individual to step into this role and continue our success is vital. Therefore, a well thought out process was started in late 2023.
We now invite our physician membership to assist in the selection process, as your input is critical.
We have arranged dates to meet two candidates, each of whom we feel would bring a wealth of abilities to our organizations. There is a separate night for each candidate in which they will give a brief statement and entertain questions. Refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be served.
- June 12 - 5:30-8:00 pm
- June 17 - 5:30-8:00 pm

Made for Medicine in the Statehouse
According to the AAMC 2019 Diversity in Medicine Facts and Figures report, African Americans make up only 5% of U.S. physician workforce, therefore, Made for Medicine serves as a programmatic solution to redress the underrepresentation of African Americans in the medical field.
The Columbus Medical Association Affiliate Made for Medicine is designed to support African American or Black middle and high school students with an interest in the field of medicine by providing them with critical foundational knowledge, hands-on learning, simulations, case study analyses, mentoring, and more.
The program is divided into 3 phases that include: Introduction to Medicine (Grades 6-7), Deeper Dive (Grades 8-9), and Commitment to Medicine (Grades 10-12). The goal of Made for Medicine is for participants to leave the program with solid preparation and commitment to pursuing a future career in medicine.
Recently, US House of Representatives member Joyce Beatty (Ohio's 3rd congressional district since 2013; former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, 2021 to 2023) spoke to a national audience regarding Made for Medicine, expressing her support for the program. Rep. Beatty noted that it’s imperative for representation in medicine, from direct bedside care to medical education.
She noted Made for Medicine as a shining example of how the medical community can uplift Black and Brown students from a young age and encourage their success to bring more diversity in medicine. For more information, visit https://www.madeformedicine.org/

Ohio Statehouse Updates: House of Medicine May Meeting Details Two Pieces of Ohio Legislation |
Recently, the Ohio House of Medicine (HOM) statewide coalition met to discuss nearly twentylegislative and/or policy updates happening in the Ohio General Assembly. The HOM is made up of off all the state physician specialty groups and local/regional medical societies. Twice a year these groups convene to discuss and share collective legislative priorities in support of Ohio’s physicians. Two of these items discussed do have timely follow up activity, outlined below:
House Bill (HB) 452: HB 452 is supported by many physicians’ organizations across Ohio and is making meaningful effort in striving for the Ohio legislature to address violence against healthcare providers. HB 452 requires that a reporting system be in place and ensures that adverse actions cannot be taken against a physician for making that report. Not only will this provision empower providers to tell their stories, but it will also allow hospitals to track in a more formal way the attacks against their workers. Only when we know the true scope of the problems, can we work to eliminate the risk to our physicians. Violence against healthcare workers is contributing to burnout and resulting in providers leaving the field. Some are being injured in such a manner that forces them out of practice. HB 452 requires that all hospitals develop a security plan and requires there be a person on-site that is trained in de-escalation in high-risk areas like the emergency department and psychiatric departments. If a person exhibiting aggressive behavior can be de-escalated, disaster can be avoided. HB 452 also requires that direct patient care providers be involved in creating these security plans. If CMA members are interested in getting involved, please contact carrie@healthimpactohio.org, and for more information, you can read HB 452 Text Here.
Senate Bill (SB) 60: SB 60 would establish licensure by the State Medical Board for a new allied practitioner, certified mental health assistants (CMHAs). The Ohio State Medical Association(OSMA) and the Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Association (OPPA) have identified the ten changes we would request to be made to this legislation to ensure consistency, competency, and patient safety While there is a shared common goal that drives the intent behind the bill - to help address the increased need for mental health care services across the state – OSMA expressed that they do not believe that this proposal is the solution. As discussed during the HOM meeting, the Ohio Senate currently plans on moving SB 60 before they break for summer, so now would be the time for interested parties to voice their opinions. Again, if interested, please contact carrie@healthimpactohio.org, and for more information, you can read SB 60 Text Here.

June is Men's Health Month |
June is Men's Health Month, which is a great time to raise awareness about health issues that primarily affect males, such as prostate cancer. Plus, Men's Health Month is a great time to encourage the men in your life to see their doctors for early detection and treatment.
As physicians, it can be easy to forget to take care of your health just as you take care of your patients. Use this month as a time to put some focus on yourself!
