Greetings people of Resurrection,
The end of the church year is fast approaching. As it comes to a close, we have a season of big reminders. On the 2nd, we celebrated All Saints Day, remembering all the Christian departed who have ever lived, those who have already completed the race we yet run. Then, the church year ends on the 23rd, when we celebrate Christ the King, reminding us that whatever is happening in the world, Christ remains in charge, and his purpose will not be denied. This is a season that encourages us to reflect on the church year behind, before the cycle begins anew.
The most commonly used metaphor in the bible for the Christian experience is running a race. How was this year’s leg of that long race? Was it easy? Sometimes we get those times, when it all seems an easy downhill with the wind at our back. Other times, it feels like an uphill slog all the way, or we twist our ankle and have to keep on anyway. Often, it is a mix of both hard patches and easy ones. What experiences have you had, running the Christian race in the year behind?
What have you learned? Where have you struggled? What insights into scripture have you had? Where have you sensed God’s Holy Spirit in your life? How have you grown as a Christian, or not? All of our experiences can be useful for becoming more faithful disciples of our Lord if we learn from them.
Take time as the church year draws to a close to reflect. God has been with you through it all. Examine this portion of your Christian race, and learning from it, gain resolve and momentum for the year ahead. The race beckons. Let us keep running.
