THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday

Come out with us: we’re celebrating our 1st Anniversary as an Affirming Congregation in the United Church of Canada. That’s no small thing… from the guiding document of the accrediting body, Affirm United/S’Affirmer Unis: To become Affirming, your ministry embarks on an educational, discernment, and decision process that helps your ministry be PIE:

  • Public: Being out and proud! Using symbols, signs and words which are echoed outside and inside the church building, in all facets of church life.
  • Intentional: An Affirming ministry is deliberate in their process of study, education and dialogue with members of their faith community. They ensure that the history of oppression and discrimination by the Church is both understood and acknowledged, and that continued growth, education, and celebration are part of its ministry.
  • Explicit: An Affirming ministry is very clear about who it welcomes. It names queer, trans, and Two-Spirit people and the gifts they bring.

There’s always work to be done to be better at each of these, but our Affirming committee does meet regularly and has engaged in raising affirm awareness both in and around the church, and by our presence in the community. In the past year St. Andrew’s hosted a major consultation with over 80 NPO’s in Halifax’s Queer Community. We participated in the Pride Parade. And we’re growing in diversity in our governance structures and in our weekly worship. There’s still much to be done and we invite you to help us be better. But this Sunday, we want to celebrate an anniversary of our Affirming designation from Affirm United/S’Affirmer Unis

Join us for coffee and conversation between 10:00 and 10:30. At our worship this week we welcome two special guests: Rhiannon Makohoniuk is co-Executive Director at Rainbow Refugee Association of Nova Scotia, and will be our guest speaker; and Freya Milliken will be our music guest. There will be cake after the service, and we invite you to come dressed in all the colours of the rainbow!
