One of the most important steps toward ensuring your own safety is having a personal safety strategy in place before you need it. This program teaches the tips and techniques you need to be alert to in dangerous situations and to avoid criminal confrontation.

Episcopal Church Terminology

Become an expert

Since we talked about all the different kinds of Bishops last week, this week let's learn about the clergy who serve and lead Episcopal parishes.

Rector: A full-time priest elected by the vestry of a parish (with the Diocesan Bishop‘s approval). The Rector has responsibility for the conduct of worship and the spiritual jurisdiction of the parish, subject to the Rubrics of the Book of Common Prayer, the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church and the diocese, and the pastoral direction of the bishop. The Rector is responsible for the selection of all assistant clergy, and they serve at the discretion of the Rector.

Curate, Assistant Priest, Associate Priest: All names for parish priests who assist the Rector. They are selected by the Rector and serve under the authority and direction of the Rector.

Dean: A word with several different meanings. In our context today, the Dean is the member of the clergy in charge of a cathedral, although the cathedral is the official headquarters of the bishop. Assisting clergy at a cathedral have the title "Canon". Clergy who serve as deans use the title "The Very Reverend".

Can you name the Dean of our own Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in downtown Kansas City? His picture is shown above. (Hint: He is known as "Dean Andy")
