Nelson Congregational Church Invites Applications for Social Justice Grants"
In 2019, the Nelson Congregational Church created the Garrett-Larsen Social Justice Fund, in honor of the 19-year ministry of Rev. Dawn Garrett-Larsen in the wider Nelson community. The fund is offered to individuals or nonprofits in the Monadnock region that demonstrate a passion for social and environmental justice, a plan to advance that cause, and a need for funding.

In 2021, grants were awarded to Monadnock Quaker Meeting in Jaffrey to help build a short-term emergency shelter; to MATS (Monadnock Area Transitional Shelter) for its Hope Fund; and to the Sacred Ally Quilt Ministry for its work in racial justice. The fund also provided a challenge grant last winter to raise money to support Afghan refugees as they settle into the community.

Any individual or nonprofit group with a strong tie to the Monadnock region is invited to apply in writing. For 2022, a total of $2000 will be awarded. Recipients will be notified within four weeks of the October 31 deadline.

To receive an application form and details on the process and criteria for applying, email [email protected], or call the church office, 603-847-3280. The guidelines and application are also available at nelsonchurch.org/social-justice-fund

Please Remember in Your Prayers...
Bryan Parrish, a mission worker with our Common Global Ministries in Congo, writes of the enormous challenge faced by the Congolese people: “A rebel group called M23, backed by the government of Rwanda, started a new offensive last June. Cities have been occupied, and thousands of families have been driven from their homes. . . For the moment, there is no way of knowing when the fighting will end, allowing the families to return to their homes. . . I was honored this week to meet Reverend Dr. Denis Mukwege, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018. Not only is he a minister in one of the communities of the Church of Christ in Congo (ECC) he is also a gynecologist in charge of the Panzi hospital, which treats women and children survivors of sexual violence. Rape is one of the “weapons” to drive families from their homes to better exploit the minerals. The work at the Panzi hospital involves physical, psychological, and spiritual healing. At the end of our meeting, he requested that we pray for the Congolese population.” Let us join Mr. Parrish and the Rev. Dr. Mukwege in praying for the Congolese people.

O God, in your tender mercy,
Hear our prayers!
