Necessity Pantry Ingathering tomorrow

Your gift helps others in need

This Sunday is our monthly ingathering for the Necessity Pantry. The pantry provides personal care items for individuals and families in financial stress. Regularly needed items include shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, disposable razors, shaving cream, bath soap, lotion, deodorant, laundry detergent, toilet paper and feminine hygiene and incontinence products. Cash donations are also gratefully accepted.

The Necessity Pantry is a cooperative ministry supported by the Church of the Resurrection in Blue Springs, St. Anne’s in Lee’s Summit, Trinity and St. Michael’s in Independence, and St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Independence.

From Father Jonathan +

The Saints in Light

This season is the time of year when the church goes out of its way to remember those who have died. This week, we started putting materials out for people to write down the names of those they want specifically remembered on All Saints Day. It is a time of the year for Christians to consider death, and we Christians have an odd relationship with death.

Our culture loves to hide from death and try to soften it with euphemisms. That is not the Christian way, we don’t pass on, we die. Death is real. The suffering of being separated from loved ones is real. Yet, even as we acknowledge the reality of death, we deny its power. Death is not permanent. It is not the last word. As Jesus himself said, “God is God not of the dead but of the living” (Matthew 22:32). Or, as Paul put it, “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you” (Romans 8:11).

We miss those who have died. We remember them in love. Yet we remember that through the love of God they are not truly dead. The resurrection is still to come, and we will be raised and reunited with them, to live with each other and Christ forever.

We have two weeks to All Saints Day. Remember our dearly departed. Acknowledge pain and loss where it is felt. Yet, never forget that they are not gone, they are the Saints in Light. They have gone on where we will eventually go too. They will be raised as we will be raised, and then we will never be separated again.

Stewardship Campaign enters week 3

Please submit your Pledge by November 1

Jesus is handed a coin and asks whose image it bears. Caesar’s image is stamped into the metal, and Jesus says to give Caesar what belongs to Caesar—and to God what belongs to God.

Scripture has already told us what bears God’s image: we do. That turns a clever answer about taxes into a much larger claim about belonging.

The Christian life is not a matter of deciding which small portion of ourselves belongs to God. Our whole lives bear God’s imprint. Our money, time, labor, relationships, imagination, and choices all belong within the life we offer back to God.

Stewardship is therefore not simply about making a gift. It is about learning to live as someone who knows whose image they bear.

Please return your pledge card by placing it in the offering plate on Sunday. You can also pledge on-line (click here).

Bring a Guest Sunday

Next Sunday, October 25

Bringing a guest to church is a welcoming and memorable experience when you plan ahead to make them feel comfortable. Our Episcopal service follows a beautiful, structured liturgical tradition that is deeply welcoming but it can feel a bit overwhelming for a newcomer.

Some practical tips and ideas for bringing a guest:

Make a Low-Pressure Invitation: Keep it simple and friendly, such as, "Hey, would you like to come to church with me this Sunday?" without making them feel cornered. Use your elevator speech.

Offer some warm Hospitality: Maybe pair your invitation with a caring gesture, like offering to pick them up, grabbing coffee or a light breakfast beforehand.

Communicate the Details: Let them know what to expect, what to wear (casual attire is best), and what the service will be like.

Sit Together and Guide the Way: Sit by them during the service, help them follow along with the bulletin and introduce them to a few friendly faces at Resurrection without overwhelming them.

Remembering all our Saints

All Saints' is a service of remembrance in the church year for loved ones who have died.

We will read the names of our family and friends who have entered into eternal life during our service on All Saints'.

Please call or e-mail Elaine Gilligan with your request or submit your names using this link by Sunday, October 25. You may also submit your request at church using the form in the pews and putting it in the offering plate.

Join us for Bible Study every Wednesday at 1:00 pm

Why do we have Bible Study?

Our church’s catechism gives a good answer to these questions.

Q. Why do we call the Holy Scriptures the Word of God?

A. We call them the Word of God because God inspired their human authors and because God still speaks to us through the Bible.

Q. How do we understand the meaning of the Bible?

A. We understand the meaning of the Bible by the help of the Holy Spirit, who guides the Church in the true interpretation of the Scriptures.

We believe God still speaks to us today. A key part of Christian life is seeking out what God is saying to us. The main way we do that is through scripture, the Word of God. How do we understand what the scripture means? We understand it by the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit in the gathered church. That means if we want to know what God is saying to us, we need to read the Bible, and we need to explore it together with others, guided by the Holy Spirit. That’s what Bible Study is all about! Come and join us Wednesdays at 1 as we seek to do exactly that.
