Act Now to Join a Pastoral Leadership Development Group in the Fall of 2022
Brene Brown defines resilience as “…the ability to practice authenticity when we experience shame [or other emotions], to move through the experience without sacrificing our values, and to come out on the other side … with more courage, compassion, and connection than we had going into it” (Daring Greatly, p.76). The practice and experience of ministry, especially in these demanding times, can be overwhelming, confusing, and even painful. Cultivating resilience is a key spiritual practice for clergy.

To foster this trait, the NH Conference and PCS in Manchester offer Pastoral Leadership Development Groups (PLDGs). Meeting ten sessions per year, each group provides a setting to develop resilience personally and professionally in various ministry settings.

All PLDGs are led by skilled trained facilitators. You will see groups for active parish pastors, clergy newly called to ministry and/or the NH Conference, members-in-discernment, retired clergy, and minsters in specialized settings such as chaplaincy, pastoral psychotherapy, spiritual direction, etc. The NH Conference underwrites this program through the Grace Scott Fund, and each participant pays $250 annual tuition (no fee for retirees).

To join a PLDG starting this fall, contact the facilitator of a group that interests you. For general questions about the program, reach out to PLDG Administrator David Reynolds at (603) 533-8377 or [email protected].

Now is the time to join a group, as they fill up quickly. Come and nurture your resilience in a PLDG!

Featured speakers will include Roishetta Ozane from Healthy Gulf, Lois Bower-Bjornson from the Clean Air Council, and David J.X. González from the University of California-Berkeley. Even if you can’t make the scheduled time of 1:00 PM ET on Wednesday, July 6th, still sign-up, and we will send you a recording. Register now!

Pastoral Letter Addressing the Attacks on People of Transgender or Nonbinary Experience
Dear Family of the United Church of Christ,

The Council of Conference Ministers, the Officers of the United Church of Christ, and the UCC Open and Affirming Coalition join together in this pastoral letter addressing the attacks on people of transgender or nonbinary experience across the United States.

We greet you in the name of the God of compassion and justice.

As leaders in the United Church of Christ, we want every person of transgender or nonbinary binary experience to know this: you are beloved by God. No earthly power can separate you from God’s love. God created you perfectly: your gender identity or expression is God’s gift to you and the world.

Yet, across America, laws and executive orders are criminalizing the lifesaving treatment that transgender youth need to complete their journey to wholeness and, at the same time, are depriving parents of the right to make medical decisions for their children. These laws, enacted or proposed in states across the country, are part of a broader campaign to reverse basic rights for LGBTQ+ Americans. Alabama, Arkansas, and Arizona already ban medical care for trans youth. In Texas, the state government has defined gender-affirming care as “child abuse.” Fifteen states have banned participation by transgender youth in school sports. Six states have adopted “don’t say gay or trans” laws that have erased any mention of LGBTQ+ people from school life. Continue reading >>

Please Remember in Your Prayers...
We pray, O Lord, for change. Jesus you revealed God through your wise words and loving deeds, and we encounter you still today in the faces of those whom society has pushed to the margins. Guide us, through the love you revealed, to establish the justice you proclaimed, that all peoples might dwell in harmony and peace, united by that one love that binds us to each other, and to you. And most of all, Lord, change our routine worship and work into genuine encounter with you and our better selves so that our lives will be changed for the good of all. Amen

This prayer from the Archdiocese of Baltimore and the Black Catholic ministry focuses on finding hope, freedom, and justice on Juneteenth.

O God, in your tender mercy,
Hear our prayers!
