Greetings people of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection! This summer I will be offering 2 classes for our community.
The first will be a class we have been jokingly calling “Episcopal 101,” but it is much more than that. It’s going to be a walkthrough of the history and beliefs of our church, what is known as catechesis. We’ll explore many aspects of the church, seeking to draw closer to God as we do. We will explore how we Episcopalians fit into this odd global thing called the Anglican Communion. And we will do this through a book called Always Open by Richard Giles, available through Amazon. When we have discussed our way through that book, we will discuss the catechesis found within the prayer book itself.
My hope is this will be a place to explore and answer questions for inquirers and church members new and old. We’ll learn many things, and hopefully deepen your faith and understanding, while learning more of the beautiful depth of our tradition.
The classes will be every Thursday at 6:00 pm in the Undercroft, starting on May 2 and running until approximately August 29.
Additionally, in June. I will be leading a short class on spirituality and secular music.
St. Augustine famously said, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” The Christian perspective is that at the bottom of all longing and spirituality is God, even if the person expressing it is not aware or rejects the idea. There are spiritual insights even in totally secular music.
The purpose of the class will be to hear secular music, and interpret the lyrics through the lens of Christian faith. The music will be wide-ranging. We’ll look at music from Jim Croce and Leonard Cohen, all the way to Social Distortion and Bone Thugs N Harmony. People are also encouraged to bring their own songs and lyrics they wish to discuss.
This class will run in June on Wednesday nights at 6:00 pm in the undercroft.
Both of these classes should be a lot of fun. I’ll see you there!
