From Fr. Jonathan +

Advent drawing to a close

As the second week of Advent draws to a close, we transition from reflecting on peace this week to considering the joy Christ’s birth brings us in the week ahead. But before we get to joy, let us consider one more time the peace that Christ brings us that causes jot to spring forth. To do that, I would like to read a single verse from the gospel of John.

In verse 14:27 Jesus told his disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

What does this mean? What does in mean that Jesus leaves his peace with us and gives it to us? What does it mean that he does not give as the world gives, and why should we not let our hearts be troubled and afraid? (pause)

Simply put, in his birth, Jesus heralds that the dawning of a new possibility for peace that has begun through him. This is a new and endlessly multifaceted peace. A cosmic peace. A new thing happens in Jesus, and the world is not the same.

We have a new peace given from Jesus that is a different gift from anything the world gives. This is a peace that begins in our hearts and reaches out from there to all of creation. There is only one appropriate response to the peace that Christ’s birth means, and that is joy. Let us be people of peace, joyfully striving after our Lord. Amen

Peace of Christ,

Fr. Jonathan +

Happy Anniversary Fr. Doug +

43rd anniversary of

Ordination to the Priesthood

This week we give special thanks for the ministry of Fr. Doug Johnson + and his long-time service to the Church of the Resurrection.

Please congratulate and remember Fr. Doug +, who will celebrate the 43rd anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood on Monday, December 15.

Let us pray:

O God, by whose command the order of all time runs its course, look graciously upon your servant, Douglas, whom you have been pleased to ordain to the order of your holy priesthood.

On this anniversary, we remember the day of his calling and consecration. We give you thanks for the journey, the blessings, and the struggles that have shaped his ministry.

By your grace, may he ever be sustained by your presence and power, finding renewed strength and deep purpose in your unending love. May the mind of Christ live in him, controlling all he does and says, and may the peace of God rule his life, bringing calm to comfort the sick and sorrowing.

Help him to rejoice in the gift of service, to love as Christ loves, and to always be ready to say, "Here I am, Lord; I will go, Lord, if you lead me, and I will hold your people in my heart".

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We invite you to offer your pain to the Christ child in this service and pray you will find hope and comfort in knowing you are not alone.

*These services will be live-streamed.

Reverse Advent Calendar

To benefit CSL

The Daughters of the King are sponsoring a Reverse Advent Calendar this year to benefit the Community Services League (CSL) of Blue Springs.

A reverse advent calendar is a way to give back during the holidays, where instead of receiving an item each day, you add one item to a box or container to donate. At the end of the countdown to Christmas, the DOK will collect and deliver the items to CSL.

Pick-up the list of suggested items to donate each day in the Narthex.
