St. David's Book Club

St David’s Book Club News

by Cathy Schwichtenberg

NOTE: Date changed due to National Night Out.

The St. David’s Book Club upcoming selection will be discussed on Tuesday, August 8, from 6:30 pm – 7:55 pm. This month’s book is Little Bee by Chris Clive.

Book clubs in search of the next Kite Runner need look no further than this astonishing, flawless novel about what happens when ordinary, mundane Western lives are thrown into stark contrast against the terrifying realities of war-torn Africa. Their marriage in crisis, Andrew and Sarah O'Rourke impulsively accept a junket to a Nigerian beach resort as a last-ditch attempt to reconcile. When machete-wielding soldiers appear out of the jungle and force them to determine the fate of two African girls, everyone's lives are irrevocably shattered. Two years later in a London suburb, one of the girls, now a refugee, reconnects with Sarah. Together they face wrenching tests of a friendship forged under extreme duress. Best-selling author Cleave (Incendiary) effortlessly moves between alternating viewpoints with lucid, poignant prose and the occasional lighter note. A tension-filled dramatic ending and plenty of moral dilemmas add up to a satisfying, emotional read. Highly recommended for all libraries and book clubs. ~Hclib.org

Creekside Baptisms - August 13

Shall We Gather at the River....

Yes!

Some details:

--bring a chair or blanket to sit on, if you are able (we will have some chairs available).

--wear water shoes if you wish to wade in the water! We'll also have creek water in a basin for those who wish to dip their fingers in after we renew our baptismal vows.

--in case of rain, worship will be indoors at church. Be on the lookout for an early Sunday morning email or check updates on our website, www.stdavidsparish.org.

--Stick around after the service is done, as some fun will ensue with a visit from Jilly Beans Ice Cream Truck— each person may get one free ice cream treat!

--bring a friend!

Directions and Parking

--We'll be just east of Plymouth Road on Minnetonka Blvd and just west of the Dairy Queen, by the park gazebo.

--There's a lot of construction at the site, but it is still accessible.

--You may park in the main St. David's Center lot off of Plymouth Road or park at the church and walk down. We've been assured that the sidewalks along Minnetonka Blvd and Plymouth Rd will be accessible. For those needing to park closer, there are a limited number of spots on Bridge St. east of the park gazebo.

Outreach

In Memory of Amara

Over the years, St. David’s has prayed for Amara Strande as she battled cancer since she was 15.  Recently several organizations have paid tributes to Amara’s work to get PFAS (known as “forever chemicals”) legislation passed in MN. On April 14, Amara died at age 20, just weeks before lawmakers would pass the legislation now known as “Amara’s Law,” banning the use of PFAS in Minnesota. Read more about Amara’s courageous fight in these articles.

St.  David’s sends our thoughts and prayers to Amara's father Michael Strande, her mother Reverend Dana Strande, her sister Nora Strande, and to all of her family and friends.

In her memory, donations to assist Amara's family with medical and hospice expenses can be given here.

Back to School Supply Drive

Every August, St David’s parishioners donate school supplies (K-12) and/or cash to the organization Resource West, a division of ICA, helping families and children right here in our western suburbia neighborhoods. The need, as always, is great. Please place your donations in the marked boxes located in both the narthex and office entrance foyers. If you prefer, you may write a check to ICA (school supplies noted in memo line) and drop in the Sunday collection plate. A big THANK YOU to all at St David’s for your continued generosity. Questions, please contact Anne Monteith or the church office.

Loaves and Fishes

Four Volunteers are needed for each date. Two for cooking with the L&F coordinator from 3:00-5:00 and two to package and serve from 4:30 to 6:30.

ICA Update

ICA Sunday this Sunday!

Did you know that ICA has a Kids’ Summer Market? Many children don’t have food available during the summer months and no longer receive their daily school breakfasts and lunches. ICA’s Kids’ Summer Market is available for anyone using ICA food services who has school-aged kids. The shelf has a variety of kid-friendly snacks and other meal components such as mac & cheese, cereal, applesauce cups, canned fruits & vegetables, peanut butter & jelly and many other items.

For the August ICA Sunday, please consider donating any of the following items  to support this important summer program.

  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly, jam
  • Canned tuna
  • Canned chicken
  • Rice
  • Beans

As always, these are simply suggestions. Please feel free to donate whatever you wish.  If you prefer to donate funds to ICA, you can drop a check made out to ICA in the Sunday collection plate or donate online at www.icafoodshelf.org, clicking on the Donate section. Anything you wish to donate will always be most appreciated.

Gardening for a Cause

Hopefully, your gardens are starting to produce despite our current drought situation. Many of the families who use ICA services don’t have access to fresh produce. While ICA is able to purchase some items, it still relies heavily on homegrown donations throughout the summer.

Please consider sharing some of your harvest and support local families.  Home-grown produce is an incredible gift to share. ICA accepts any size donation, whether a handful of cherry tomatoes or a bushel of apples. All sorts of vegetables, herbs and fruits are welcome,

Big Island & Back Paddle Event, August 12

Minnesotans love our lakes. Here’s a chance to enjoy being out on Lake Minnetonka and support ICA while having fun with your family and/or friends. The annual Big Island & Back Paddle Event is coming up soon on Saturday, August 12. Grab your canoe, kayak or paddleboard and head to Excelsior for this 10th annual event. A portion of proceeds from the event will be donated to support ongoing ICA programming.  Interested? You can register at:

https://www.trireg.com/bigislandandback.

And from a neighbor using ICA’s services: “It feels great to have snacks and extra food for my kids during the summer.  Thank you very much for all the help.”

Beacon Youth Resident Move-In

Donations Needed!

Did you know that in MN, almost a quarter of youth who experience homelessness identify as LGBTQ? Beacon's housing for homeless youth and our awesome service partners provide stability and community with great success - most youth moving on to independence in under 2 years.

One way you can show support and keep the spirit of Pride month going is by donating household items and supplies for residents moving into their new home, so they can "shop" to set up their household and feel at home after the trauma of homelessness.

Donations are urgently needed for Prior Crossing in St Paul where new residents are expected to move in THIS MONTH! Contact Fritz or Emily for more info on needed items or share this link to a Target registry!

https://www.target.com/gift-registry/gift/prior-crossing-move-ins

It’s easy to order online from the registry and it will be delivered to Prior Crossing. The cost of items is minimal from $.50 to $25. If you can help out, please check out the registry link.
