Update from Katherine

But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.   2 Corinthians 4:7

Beloved at St. David’s,

Thank you for your support and prayers during a time of unexpected health challenges.  Early in the month I tested positive for Covid, only testing because I had been directly exposed. Thankfully, I had virtually no symptoms.  I am incredibly grateful for the Rev. Guy Drake who stepped in at the last minute to preach, and for the Rev. Len Freeman who made himself available to celebrate the Eucharist in my absence.

And then, on Saturday afternoon, I was diagnosed with a tear in my retina and was quickly scheduled for an emergency laser procedure to take place early the next morning.  I was scared, and very grateful that I could get the treatment, and quickly!  At every turn I received attentive, skilled, and kind medical care.  During this first week of recovery, I’m moving gently (no eye patch, I can walk about, and can even drive), trusting that good healing will have taken place by the time of my follow up appointment next week.

And—blessings upon blessings—the Rev. Nick Mezacapa was already planning to drive up from Rochester with his wife, Edna, to be with us at the creek for our annual outdoor baptism service.  Nick had become part of the St. David’s community when he led Sunday worship during my sabbatical in 2017.  He and Edna had fallen in love with the creek side service and have attended when able to do so since then.  When I called Nick on Saturday afternoon and explained the situation, he did not miss a beat and agreed to fill in for me.  Thank you, dear colleague Nick!  And thank you to all of you who hosted a beautiful gathering on Sunday, complete with ice cream!

In his 2nd letter to the people at Corinth, Paul speaks of the fragility of our bodies: “We have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.”  It is a humbling thing to remember my own frailty, my own “clay jar-ness”.  It is a gift, too, to be jolted into a shift in perspective, to remember (again) the need, always, to connect to the love and power of God in all things and at all times. I am guilty of relying too often on my own strength, forgetting that my own strength is fueled by the divine force that is much bigger than me. “So we do not lose heart…even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day,” Paul continues.  I am being renewed day by day and my heart is full. I have received so much during these days of challenge.  Thank you for being the beloved people of St. David’s who know how to Love God, Love One Another.  I’ll see you Sunday!

In Christ’s love,

Katherine

Children and Youth Ministry

Asking big questions is how we learn about others, ourselves, God, and the world around us. This year, I really hope to focus on kids' questions and let them guide our learning in both Children's Time, and Youth Group.

Parents, grandparents, and other grownups - this can start at home! Check out this podcast: Ask Away Podcast with Meredith Miller

Meredith Miller is "a pastor and parent who helps grownups, and the kids they love, engage with the Bible and faith in ways that are life-giving, fun, and a fit for their real lives." Meredith hosts the podcast along with her own kids, and has a special time at the end where kids can send in their own questions!

This podcast is a great way to learn about Bible stories, hear other kids ask big questions, and invite your child to ask questions and reflect on what God might be saying to us through these stories. And you can just plug in and listen on the way to school or before bed!

Listen along with me to Ask Away Podcast. I'm curious to hear your questions!

All Parish Picnic and Kickoff Sunday

The Bouncy House has been ordered, the grills are getting cleaned, and our time to gather for an old-fashioned church potluck picnic has finally arrived.

All are welcome to come partake in this fun, delicious get-together on Sunday, September 10th immediately after church. Plus, recall this is also Kick-Off Sunday celebrating our reuniting after a long hot summer, complete with new updated Ministry Guides and Church Directories for you to take home. If we still have not sold you on the day, remember this is also the day 13 lucky winners will find out if their ticket is a cash winner from our summer-long Gifts of Gratitude fundraiser!

As always, we appreciate a head count of attendees, and a mention of what you would like to bring to share (side dish, salad, or dessert). Burgers, hotdogs, buns, condiments, beverages, and paper products will be provided.  Please sign up from the Sign-Up Genius link below or opt to sign up by pen to paper on the clipboards at church (narthex/undercroft).  If you are unable to bring a dish to share, or forget to sign up, no worries…. Please just come as you are as there is always plenty of food!

Trail Magic--Take 2--Sunday August 27th

Join us after the church service on Sunday, August 27th down by the trail. Our second Faithful Innovation experiment back in July was cancelled due to the weather/dangerous air quality, so we plan to do it again before summer gets away from us. The first trail experiment was so much fun and rewarding, therefore we are anxious to get out there again!

All you need to do, show up and sit by the trail with us, offering up hydration, dog and human treats (ice pops), listening ears, and conversation to our neighbors passing by. Kids are most welcome to attend too!

We hope you will participate in this little hospitality experiment right here in our neighborhood!  Questions, please contact me, Diane, at dcurley@stdavidsparish.org

Back to School Supply Drive

Every August, St David’s parishioners donate school supplies (K-12) and/or cash to the organization Resource West, helping families and children right here in our western suburbia neighborhoods. The need, as always, is great. Please place your donations in the marked boxes located in both the narthex and office entrance foyers. If you prefer, you may write a check to Resource West (school supplies noted in memo line) and drop in the Sunday collection plate. A big THANK YOU to all at St David’s for your continued generosity. Questions, please contact Anne Monteith or the church office.

Endowment Committee Update

The Endowment Committee would like to invite you to a special Coffee Hour after the 9:30 service on August 27th. It will be held in the Narthex so that we can focus on the names of all the donors to the Cornerstone Endowment and truly appreciate their contributions toward the future of our church.

We’d also like to inform you that the Endowment Committee has had several changes in membership and leadership this year. We welcomed a new Sr. Warden, Allison Ferro, new Vestry Rep, David Niles, and new member, Barbara Hise. The Committee also appointed Vida Edmond as Chair after Robby Stokes decided to step back after several years of leading the Endowment Committee. Vida previously served as Vice Chair for 3 years and Bill Jacobs will now take that role. Robby will remain on the Committee as a member as Vida takes over the leadership role.

To add someone to the prayers, please contact the office: office@stdavidsparish.org

We will include all individuals in the prayers list for four consecutive weeks, and then they will be removed from the list. If the prayer need is ongoing, please reach out and we will keep their names on the list. If anyone's prayer need is shorter than four weeks, please also note that. This way we will keep all prayer lists updated and recent.
